If there was any doubt that a surging Minnesota Twins team was going to buy at the MLB trade deadline, Thursday’s thrilling victory over the Kansas City Royals stamped that. Down to their final strike, trailing 3-0, Minnesota got an ultimate grand slam from Kody Clemens, who lifted the Twins to their 55th win on the season, pulling them to an even .500 and just three games back of the first-place Chicago White Sox in the American League Central division, and just one game back of the Cleveland Guardians for the third and final wild-card spot.
There had been some buzz in recent days that Minnesota could be looking to buy at the deadline, which would be a stark reversal from last season when there was a fire sale at this point in the year. It seems like every time around late July and early August the last few years, there have been conversations about whether guys like Byron Buxton and Joe Ryan could be available, and not only will those two cornerstones be staying put, but they are getting some reinforcements around them.
That began late Thursday night when Minnesota struck a deal with the New York Mets to acquire left-handed reliever A.J. Minter. This also kicks off what is expected to be a fire sale for the Mets, who have been arguably the most disappointing team in baseball this season and are widely known to be open for business.
On the season, Minter owns a 2.35 ERA in 23 innings pitched, striking out 20 batters and surrendering just two walks. He is in his 10th MLB season and owns a 3.18 ERA for his career across 382.2 innings pitched. The left-hander was a big piece of the Atlanta Braves’ 2021 World Series run when he appeared in eight games that postseason, spanning 12 innings pitched, where he struck out 18 batters and surrendered just eight hits. Relief pitching is always at a premium this time of year, and the Twins have landed one of the best left-handed options available.
According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, the return the Twins are sending to New York is prospects Bruin Agbayani and Billy Amick.
For Twins fans, this is an exciting time. Just one year removed from a very disappointing 2025 campaign that saw Minnesota go 70-92, the team is winning again and is making a real push for October.
