McDonald hired Leslie Frazier as his asst HC.

I'm fine with that. If we want an experienced presence then Asst HC is fine.

I just don't want to hire some washed up, stale ass OC or DC just because they have experience aka Mike McCoy.

If it was me, I'd bring in Thomas Brown from the Pats (current passing game coordinator there, former Panthers and Bears OC and Rams running backs coach). Only 39 and considered an up and coming offensive talent. He can handle the run game for Mike and has experience at OC to keep everything running smoothly.

Tee Martin, the Ravens QB coach is another highly regarded option.

For defensive, I'd go with Zach Orr. He's still free after the Ravens cleared house. Or maybe Bobby King from the Eagles.
I don’t think Thomas Brown would want to go to a team where the HC has already said he is calling the plays. Would love it to happen though

I think he would. He's on a redemption trail after stints at under OC under terrible HCs. I think non play calling OC is the next step, where it can be said he "revolutionised the run game" or "a lot of LeFleurs success comes from Thomas Brown running the offense...".

He ain't getting past Josh McDaniels at the Pats and half the league just changed OCs already.

Some of the benefit of having a former HC of staff to help a first timer is just logistical things as well as another option in how to do things. Press conferences. Media. Time management.

I think it is OK to make mistakes and learn from them. That's why I'm fine with not bringing in some old has been to hold ML's hand.

I can see that. I think asst HC is a good position for it. Bring in Riverboat Ron, he'd be a great add.

I really don't want a Gus Bradley or similar for either coordinator though who's leading quality is experience and not actually being very good at the job.

Fair. I agree that Mike McCoy sucked and would be at the bottom of a group. I would be ok with someone like Matt Nagy in that role but it's far more likely to be someone he has a connection to.

Yeah Nagy would be fine too.

I'd also be fine with hiring someone actually good who is experienced at DC, such as Jim Schwartz, if he leaves the Browns or Browns give him permission. Teryl Austin would be another good option.

oooooo!!!! Would LOVE to snag Jim Schwartz! Even though I’m not a fan of him as a person, I love his aggressiveness.

How did it work for Mike McDonald, Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan?

McVay did have Wade Philips at the start but I never got a whiff it was to hold his hand. He was still a very good DC.

2 of the 3 examples you gave contradicted your point.

Tee has a good mind but I think lacks the experience to make this leap. Brown is interesting as his background was mostly with RBs, then the Rams elevated him to Assistant HC. He’s been an OC and lately worked a great deal with passing, though his background is not really in that area. They’d need to get a good QB coach on board if he’s the OC and QB development is needed. He has the most varied, but somewhat confusing coaching history I’ve encountered. He must really make a great first impression, but he also may be quickly Wearing out his welcome. I’d class this as a gamble, but an interesting one. I’m more conservative about this job considering what has to be done rebuilding-wise.

I am interested in Davis Webb as OC,... the guy has some serious smarts. It was obvious when he was playing and seems to have transferred to coaching. I think he could have a very promising future in the league
I don't think he leaves Denver to be OC and not call plays.

He won't be calling plays in Denver either. Sean Payton calls the plays there. It's becoming more and more common that an offensive minded head coach calls his own plays.

Right, which is why I said he will probably wait for an opportunity to call plays elsewhere.
Not sure why anyone would do this now. It clearly isn’t hindering guys getting HC positions with little or no play calling in their resume.

When do peeps think ML will start putting his puzzle pieces in? Do we have to wait until after the superbowl for news?
