Angelique Chengelis of The Detroit News breaks down Michigan's Sweet 16 opponent in the Women's NCAA Tournament.
▶ This is the Cardinals’ 17th NCAA Tournament in 18 years – 15th straight – under head coach Jeff Walz. Louisville is 47-27 all-time in the tournament, including Walz’s 43-16. The Cardinals have reached the Sweet 16 13 times, the Elite Eight eight times, the Final Four four times, including in 2022 after beating Michigan in the Elite Eight, and twice reached the national title game. Walz is tied for third among active head coaches with 13 career Sweet 16 appearances, joining coaching elite, Dawn Staley, and trails only Geno Auriemma and Kim Mulkey. The Cardinals have made the Sweet 16 in seven of the last nine NCAA Tournaments.

▶ Louisville has held opponents to 60.7 points per game this season and held opponents to 60 points or fewer in 15 games this season. The Cardinals have held teams to 50 points or fewer seven times this year and have held their opponents below their season scoring average in regulation in 33 of the last 34 games dating back to Nov. 12. Michigan ranks ninth nationally in scoring, averaging 83.9 points and in the first two NCAA Tournament rounds, averaged 87.5 points against Holy Cross and N.C. State. Louisville in ninth nationally in scoring margin at 18.7 points.
▶ Both teams enter this game battle tested this season. Louisville played UConn and South Carolina, No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the preseason AP poll, during the nonconference, while Michigan faced UConn and Vanderbilt. Louisville was 8-6 in Quad 1 games while Michigan was 9-6. Six of Louisville’s (29-7) of seven losses this season have come to teams that are currently ranked in the Top 25 (No. 1 UConn, No. 4 South Carolina, No. 8 Duke twice, No. 16 Kentucky, No. 22 Notre Dame). Louisville has a NET ranking of 11 and its strength of schedule is ranked No. 27. The Wolverines, meanwhile, are No. 6 in NET and strength of schedule.
