The Mets need to stop pretending this season can still be rescued. That means trading Bo Bichette, Freddy Peralta, Luke Weaver, and Devin Williams before the deadline. None of those names should be moved willy-nilly. Bichette was supposed to become part of the next core, Peralta was acquired to stabilize the rotation, Weaver has been one of the more dependable arms on the staff, and Williams still carries the reputation of a proven closer. But the MLB standings matter more than the original plan.

The Mets are drifting toward irrelevance, and holding short-term pieces just to preserve the appearance of competitiveness would be the worst possible outcome. Bichette has dealt with ankle soreness and has not changed the direction of the season.

Peralta owns a 4.81 ERA and may still be the best trade chip on the roster because contenders always pay for starting pitching. Weaver has performed well enough to attract real interest. And Williams remains valuable because late-inning experience becomes expensive every July.

This is not a call for a five-year teardown. It is a call for honesty. The Mets should keep Juan Soto and other players who clearly belong on the next serious version of the roster. Everyone else should be available if the return improves in 2027 and beyond. That includes players the front office acquired only months ago. A bad season does not become less bad because management refuses to admit its offseason plan failed.

The market should also help. Several contenders need starting pitching. Almost everyone needs bullpen help. Bichette offers positional flexibility and a track record of offensive production if his ankle is sound. New York can either turn disappointment into prospect capital or drag four useful assets through a lost second half. Trading them would be uncomfortable. Holding them would be worse.
