There have been reports going around now that New York Mets infielder Bo Bichette is expected to opt out of his contract at the end of the year. Bichette, who took a three-year contract with New York, finds himself in one of the stranger positions in Major League Baseball.

He has a three-year, $126 million deal, with an average AAV of about $42 million in the next two seasons. To say that Bichette is going to get that money with another team sounds ridiculous at the moment, as he's been one of the more below-average infielders in baseball, currently posting a negative 0.3 bWAR.

That's part of the reason why a former general manager went so far as to say it's ridiculous that Bichette would even be mentioned as a player who could opt out of his deal.

He added that there's no chance another team will give him that much money, and I can't disagree with that.

“I really can't imagine why any executive would think that the season he's having would be worthy of opting out, considering that he's going to walk away from so much money that he's not going to find in free agency from anybody else. Nobody's going to give him $40 million a year. Nobody is going to give him $30 million a year. In fact, I don't think anybody's going to give him $20 million a year,” said Steve Phillips, per MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM on X.

If there's one thing Bichette might have on his side, it's the hope that he turns things around over the next few months.

His last 10 games have been rather impressive, getting at least two hits in the past three contests, including hitting two home runs against the Atlanta Braves last week with six RBIs.

However, things have been far from pretty for the right-handed hitting infielder, as he has just a .239 average, .646 OPS, and a below-league-average OPS+ by a wide margin of 81.
