NEED TO KNOW

  • Erling Haaland’s parents, Alf-Inge “Alfie” Haaland and Gry Marita Braut, welcomed him in England but raised him in Norway
  • Gry ran track and field professionally and Alfie played soccer
  • Erling chose to represent both parents’ last names on his World Cup jersey

Erling Haaland comes from an athletic family.

The soccer star was born to Alf-Inge “Alfie” Haaland and Gry Marita Braut. He’s the youngest of three children, who were primarily raised in Bryne, Norway. However, Erling was born in England during Alfie’s time playing for Manchester City in the early 2000s.

While Alfie was a professional soccer player, Gry was also a successful athlete, as a former track and field star. So, it’s no surprise that Erling went on to become a professional athlete himself, playing soccer for his dad’s team, Manchester City, and representing Norway at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

During an appearance on the Rest Is Football podcast in December 2025, Erling talked about his close relationship with his parents.

“They are proud, and that’s what I try to do,” he said. “I try to make them proud and also include them … in the football life, because it’s a special life, and it’s also a life that will last for another 10 years, and then it’s history. So, it’s also important to enjoy these moments together, as well.”

Here’s everything to know about Erling Haaland’s parents, Alf-Inge “Alfie” Haaland and Gry Marita Braut.

Erling followed in his parents’ footsteps by choosing a career in sports. Alfie was also a professional soccer player in England, where he played for Manchester City, Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, Gry was a national champion heptathlete in Norway in the 1990s, per The Athletic.

Though Alfie was a professional soccer player, he and Gry didn’t pressure Erling to take on the sport. During an appearance on the Rest Is Football podcast in December 2025, Erling said his father’s career created “the pressure a bit already,” but it was his dream to play soccer.

“My wish was I want to be the best footballer in the world,” he said. “This has always been driving me since I was young, and I’ve been putting the pressure on myself. My father and my mother never pushed me on anything.”

Erling acknowledged his family’s legacy in June 2026 when he collaborated with Budweiser in an ad on Instagram. The post compared an image of his father from the 1994 soccer tournament alongside his own photo from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Erling was born in England on July 21, 2000, and lived there for three years while his father played for Manchester City, perGQ. When Alfie retired from soccer in 2003, the family moved back to Bryne, Norway.

Since Erling was a toddler when his father played professionally, he doesn’t remember much from his early childhood in England. The soccer star told GQ he recalls that time “a little bit when I see pictures, but not a lot.”

Alfie and Gry welcomed three children together: older son Astor, daughter Gabrielle and younger son Erling.

The pair later divorced, and Alfie married his second wife, Anita Haaland Stromsvol. He has since welcomed two daughters with Anita.

Erling’s two older siblings often attend his games. In June 2026, Gabrielle shared a family photo from the stands of AT&T Stadium in Texas, where Norway won their match against Ivory Coast in the 2026 World Cup.

Alfie ended his soccer career playing for Manchester City, the team his son is currently signed with. Speaking with The New York Times in August 2022, Erling shared how meaningful it is to play in the same place that his father once did.

“It’s special that he played here, you know,” he said. “And it’s a bit special seeing old clips of him. And also the thought that he actually played in the Premier League, that’s nice, too. It’s different times, as you say, but in the end, it’s the Premier League, it’s England and this has also been a dream of mine to be playing here.”

Erling added that he and Alfie often exchange advice about soccer. “Yes, we talk a lot of football,” he said. “He is also a football freak, he watches all kinds of games.”

Alfie’s soccer career even helped motivate Erling to improve his own skills.

“When I was young I always looked at him and thought ‘Ah, he played Premier League, I would love to do the same.’ It was always in the back of my head,” he told The Telegraph in October 2023. “Even then, I was thinking, ‘I want to be better than my father,’ and kept working at it.”

Erling and Alfie have a close father-son bond. During his interview with The Telegraph, the soccer star said their relationship is stronger than just parent and child.

“As we talk, I have just got two messages from him now on my phone, I can see them right now, and we speak every day,” he said. “He’s my father but, in some ways, he’s more of a brother to me. We speak and have a really good relationship. We are good friends as well, and that’s important.”

Erling made his FIFA World Cup debut in June 2026 and wore a special jersey for the occasion. He typically has “Haaland” written on the back of his Manchester City jersey, but he added “Braut,” his mother’s maiden name, for the tournament.

While Erling’s full legal name is Erling Braut Haaland, he typically reserves using his double surname for when he’s representing Norway, per The Athletic.
