Jan. 17—MITCHELL — Harding County is undefeated no more after running into Corsica-Stickney at the Hanson Classic girls basketball showcase on Saturday.
The Jaguars, who slipped out of the South Dakota Prep Media poll top-10 this week, held the Class B No. 6-ranked Ranchers to their lowest offensive output of the season, earning a 53-46 victory at the Corn Palace.
The Jaguars grasped a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and managed to stay ahead behind a double-double effort from Hadynn Johnson with 17 points and 13 rebounds, plus three steals and two assists. Braylee Bordewyk posted 12 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Remi Nelson had nine points on a trio of 3-pointers. Sophie DeLange offered eight points and two assists, as Macayla Gerlach added seven points and four rebounds.
For the Ranchers, Raelee Hunsucker led the way with 11 points and four rebounds, while Macey Wendt had nine points and two steals. Kamry Padden recorded nine points, five assists and four steals.
Winners of five in a row, Corsica-Stickney (7-2) hosts Andes Central/Dakota Christian on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Harding County (9-1) is in action next in the first round of the Little Moreau Conference tournament on Jan. 23, in Lemmon.
Class B No. 9 Sanborn Central/Woonsocket clamped down on defense to defeat Class A Elk Point-Jefferson in the Hanson Classic at the Corn Palace.
Addison Bartholow scored 16 points with three assists, and Liz Boschee offered 13 points, 16 rebounds, one block and one steal for the Blackhawks. Cami Edwards chipped in nine points and four assists, and Lainey Goertz contributed eight points, nine rebounds, and four assists.
For EPJ, Cera Schmitz notched 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists and three steals. Makinley Hammitt and Paige Jacobs each scored six points, and Molly Geary had five points.
Now on a seven-game win streak, SCW (8-1) plays Wolsey-Wessington in the 281 Conference tournament semifinals on Monday, Jan. 19, at the Huron Arena. EPJ (3-5) visits Vermillion on Jan. 20.
In a one-point game in favor of Class B No. 1-ranked Lyman with 20 seconds left in regulation, Mak Scott delivered two critical free throws to seal the victory over Class A No. 10 Mobridge-Pollock.
After trailing by as many as 15 points late in the third quarter, the Tigers cut into the Raiders' lead in the fourth quarter to make it 54-53 with less than five minutes to go, but were unable to mount the second-half comeback.
Lyman was paced by Mak Scott with 22 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the free-throw line, plus seven rebounds and two assists. Bree Smart offered 14 points and five rebounds, while Kenzie Wagner had eight points and six rebounds. Jordyn Scott recorded seven points, 11 rebounds, six assists and two steals, as Brooke Montgomery added seven points.
Blake Thompson posted a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds in a double-double effort for Mobridge-Pollock. Tegan Konold had 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Lyman (8-0) hosts White River on Jan. 20 in Presho. Mobridge-Pollock (6-3) is back in action against Cheyenne-Eagle Butte on Jan. 20 in Eagle Butte.
Woodbury Central, out of Moville, Iowa — the Hanson Classic's first out-of-state visitors since 2019 — opened the slate by playing spoiler to event host Hanson's outing at the Corn Palace.
Genna Widman scored 20 points with two steals, and Kenzie Cross added 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Wildcats (6-6). Off the bench, Kady Lloyd had 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The Beavers got nine points, three rebounds and a steal from Ava Doyle, and six points from Kendra Endorf. Rylee Furgeson and Hannah Easton both had five points, and Lacey Easton grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
Hanson (4-7) hosts Howard on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
