Marcelo Mayer Makes Feelings Clear On Potential Move To Shortstop originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Boston Red Sox second baseman Marcelo Mayer is open to moving back to shortstop amid Trevor Story being on the injured list.
The Red Sox used Andruw Monasterio at shortstop all weekend, while the team called up Nick Sogard to serve as depth. Yet, the Red Sox hinted at Mayer going back to shortstop, which is a position he played in the minors, and he’s open to the idea.
“Wherever Trace wants me to play, that's where I'm going to go out there and give it all for the team,” Mayer said pregame on Sunday. “Obviously, that's home to me. That's where I've played my whole life. And we've had some discussions, getting some work there in practice whenever I can. But like I said, wherever Trace needs me to play, that’s where it’s going to be. Whether it’s short, whether it’s second, I'm just here to help the team.”
Mayer has only played three innings at shortstop in the MLB; however, he grew up playing the position.
So, Mayer said he’s doing some fielding drills at shortstop and will be ready if interim manager Chad Tracy puts him there.
“Yeah, we've had brief discussions about it,” Mayer said. “Get reps there and practice and see how it feels. He wouldn't want to just throw me in there after not taking reps since the offseason. But, like I said, wherever they need me to play, I’ll play.
“There's a sense of comfort there, obviously, as well as second. I've been playing there for months, so wherever it is they need me to play, I’ll get acclimated and just go out there and play hard.”
Mayer is hitting .218 with two home runs and nine RBIs this season.
