Red Sox Marcelo Mayer Reveals He Battled Injury For Two Months, Despite Report originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
There was an inflammatory story spread on Friday about the "toughness" of Boston Red Sox 23-year-old starting shortstop Marcelo Mayer.
The report, which supposedly had sources close to the Red Sox, claimed that some in the front office were growing frustrated with the young starter for "not playing through" small injuries.
Well, it took less than 12 hours for the legitimacy of that report to be smeared as interim manager Chad Tracy told reporters before Friday night's game that Mayer would be placed on the 10-day injured list with a stress fracture in his left arm.
Mayer revealed to reporters that he has been battling through the lingering soreness for close to two months.
"Approaching two months," Mayer said. "Just been and off. Some days have been worse than others. But pretty much just had a talk with the medical staff and the doctors, and they pretty much said to put a stop to it or it could possibly get worse."
The official diagnosis is a "bone stress reaction" in his left ulna.
It is worth noting that a wrist injury put an end to his year last season after he underwent surgery.
"Obviously it’s a bone injury, so kind of just need to let it rest," Mayer said. "I’m sure we’re going to be testing it week to week. Hopefully not too long. I’m going to do everything in my power to come back and play. But yeah, I think just trusting the medical staff on when that is."
There is no timetable for his return.
