Marcelo Mayer took full accountability for a costly error after Wednesday's 8-6 loss to the Colorado Rockies.

The Boston Red Sox entered the seventh inning up 6-3, and Mayer could have recorded the final out by cleanly fielding a ground ball. However, the shortstop lost the ball before he could throw it to second base. Colorado capitalized on the extra life, tying the game with three ensuing singles before scoring a pair of go-ahead runs off Justin Slaten in the eighth.

Mayer blamed himself for the tough loss when speaking to reporters after the game.

"Didn't get the ball into the glove," Mayer said. "That just can't (expletive) happen. Just a brutal error, obviously. It ended up costing us the game. To me, that's the most routine ground ball I can possibly get. This game's 100 percent on me."

Mayer began the season at second base after spending most of his 2025 rookie campaign at third, but he moved back to his original position with starting shortstop Trevor Story sidelined. Wednesday marked his second error in 23 games at shortstop, but advanced metrics grade his glovework unfavorably with minus-4 defensive runs saved.

It wasn't the only miscue that hurt the Red Sox on Wednesday. Andrew Seigler committed a throwing error to start a two-run third inning for the Rockies, who took two of three games at Coors Field.

The Red Sox will look to rebound during a vital four-game series against the New York Yankees.
