Marcelo Mayer Endorses Potential Position Change originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
No further update has been made available on the status of Boston Red Sox veteran leader Trevor Story as he continues to seek opinions on a sports hernia that may require surgery.
His absence could last up to 10 weeks should surgery be deemed necessary. This leaves a hole in the middle of the infield that interim manager Chad Tracy has chosen to fill with Andruw Monasterio for the time being.
However, second baseman Marcelo Mayer has already been floated as a potential long-term replacement. Tracy said he is considering the idea, but has not given it much thought, with Story still expected to return.
Mayer himself embraces a potential position change.
"Obviously, that’s home to me," Mayer said of the shortstop position. "That’s where I’ve played my whole life. And we’ve had some discussions, going to get some reps there in practice whenever I can. But wherever Trace [tells] you to play, that’s what it’s going to be, whether it’s short, third, second. I’m just here to help the team."
The defensive change wouldn't have an impact on the Red Sox's biggest weakness, which is its struggling lineup. But fans would love to see if the young middle infielder could be a long-term mainstay at Major League Baseball's most coveted position.
Monday night's lineup featured Mayer at second, Monasterio at shortstop, and Triple-A callup Nick Sogard starting at third base over offseason trade acquisition Caleb Durbin for the second consecutive game.
