The Denver Broncos have set several team and NFL records this season, and tight end Marcedes Lewis is part of that history. Lewis, in his 20th year as a pro, is praised for his veteran leadership and ability.
Just to give some perspective, Lewis was in the same draft class as ex-Broncos quarterback Jay Cutler, and 2006 was Sean Payton's first year as head coach in the NFL. When it comes to NFL dinosaurs, Lewis can absolutely be considered a fossil.
But as Denver has gone down several tight ends, Lewis was a great option.
“He’s right next door in the locker room,” said Broncos quarterback Bo Nix after Tuesday’s practice. "We’re right there, so we see each other every day. I think his experience is going to help us a lot, just as an offense as a whole. … Right now he’s clearly the most experienced guy at 20 years. He’s already been able to help me in some things, talk through some things and change my mindset. A guys that’s been doing it for that long, you should listen to. We’re very excited to have him, and also he’s a great player in his own right. I’m happy to have him on the field with us, too.”
It remains to be seen if Lewis still has his receiving touch. He was not targeted in his appearance against the Houston Texans on Sunday, but Lewis became the oldest tight end to ever appear in the Super Bowl era.
Serving in a blocking role, Lewis will likely be elevated from the practice squad again for Thursday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
