TOPSHAM, Maine – The York High School boys lacrosse team has been proficient at scoring goals this season. On Tuesday, June 16, the third-seeded Wildcats scored one more – a trip to the Class B state championship.
York punched its ticket to its fourth straight championship game with a 11-6 semifinal win over No. 10 Kennebunk at Mount Ararat High School.
“(Getting to the state championship) has been the goal all year long,” said York coach Bill McNamara. “We had some bumps in the road this season. There were times we didn’t play together or didn’t play well. It wasn’t there in April, but we started to see it come together in May, and in June we are playing very well as a team.”
York (12-6) will face No. 4 Marshwood on Friday, June 19, in the championship game at Memorial Stadium in Portland. Marshwood advanced with an 11-10 win over No. 1 Greely.
“Marshwood is definitely a rival, and we’ve had a lot of good games with them over the years,” McNamara said. “But I don’t think the kids will have any extra motivation. It’s for the championship. No matter who we played, they would be fired up.”
McNamara said York got off to a fast start, taking a 6-1 lead into halftime, and the defense held strong to thwart a Kennebunk comeback bid.
Trailing by five at the half, Kennebunk refused to go away. The Rams tried to keep their Cinderella run going, outscoring York 5-4 in the second half. In the end, York made enough plays to hold on, backed by 11 saves from goalie Brendan Dowling.
“Kennebunk came back in the second half, but I was proud of the way the guys weathered the storm and came through in the end,” McNamara said. “They showed a lot of grit and made big plays to keep us in the lead.”
Noah Stone paced a balanced York attack with three goals and an assist. Tyler Moores added two goals and two assists, and Brett Aceto finished with a goal and three assists. Ben Ring notched two goals and an assist, while Cooper Dodge and Parker Humphrey each scored once. Dodge, Aiden Mello and Henry Mirick added assists for the Wildcats.
McNamara said the team’s balance makes it difficult to defend, with no weak spots on either end of the field — a key to its success.
“That’s one of the great things about this team,” he said. “Usually a team has a couple of superstars, but with us, there aren’t a few guys who stand out above the rest. On any given day, different guys can step up, and that’s on both offense and defense. That’s why they’re getting a chance to play in a state championship.”
