HIGH POINT — High Point University has pieced together another challenging men’s soccer schedule.
The Panthers — who finished last year at No. 15 in the NCAA’s RPI and reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history — will face seven teams that finished in the top 50 last year — including two in the top 10.
High Point will open its season Thursday, Aug. 20, at home against LIU.
The Panthers will then visit Virginia, which was No. 5 in last year’s final RPI, on Aug. 24 and Maryland, which was No. 8, on Aug. 29. They will also face Georgetown (No. 11), UNCG (No. 27), VCU (No. 44) and Davidson (No. 52) in notable nonconference matchups.
High Point will play road matches against South Carolina on Sept. 7, Georgetown — which it beat last year — on Sept. 11 and Davidson on Sept. 15 before hosting Gardner-Webb (No. 37) on Sept. 19 to open Big South play.
The Panthers will also host nonconference matches against VCU on Sept. 2, Guilford on Sept. 25, George Washington on Oct. 13 and UNCG on Oct. 20 and conference games against Longwood on Oct. 3, Radford on Oct. 24 and UNC Asheville on Oct. 31.
High Point will be on the road for Big South matches against Winthrop on Sept. 29, USC Upstate on Oct. 9 and Presbyterian on Oct. 17. It will also play three exhibition matches — Aug. 8 at Furman (No. 14), Aug. 11 at Wofford and Saturday, Aug. 15, at home against Queens.
The Panthers — who went 14-2-4 overall last year, including 7-0 in the conference, and swept the conference regular season and tournament titles — will overall play 20 matches before heading into the Big South Conference tournament, which will be Nov. 4-14 at the higher seeds.
