MILL SPRING — High Point University won both the men’s and women’s indoor track and field championships Friday and Saturday at Tryon International.

The titles were the fourth in a row for both programs, which have also won five overall.

The Panthers totaled 188 points on the men’s side, ahead of Charleston Southern with 160, and 244 points on the women’s side, topping Charleston Southern with 165.

High Point’s Nigel Steenwinkel was named the Men’s Newcomer of the Year, while Zamesha Myle was selected Women’s Co-Newcomer of the Year. The Panthers also earned Men’s Co-Coaching Staff of the Year.

David Caivano for the men and Brianna Malone for the women were selected to the All-Academic Team.

Winning events for High Point were: Mya Hines (women’s pentathlon, 3717), Ricardo Montes de Oca (men’s pole vault, 5.37m), Justin Sluijter (men’s long jump, 7.89m), Gianna Paul (women’s high jump, 1.65m), Alyssa Hendrix (women’s 5000, 16:44.04; women’s 3000m, 9:44.49), men’s 4000m relay (10:02.13), Cole Wilson (men’s heptathlon, 5815), Alex Constantinou (men’s high jump, 2.06m), Ashlyn Giles (women’s shot put, 16.27m), Lily Houston (women’s pole vault, 4.02m), Mobughichukwu Nwakor (men’s triple jump, 15.10m), Malone (women’s mile, 4:47.83; women’s 800m, 2:11.50), Dominiq Northington (men’s 60m hurdles, 8.02), AJ Miller (men’s 800m, 1:51.58) and Simon Triezenburg (men’s 3000m, 8:50.01).

HPU’S WELSH EARNS CONFERENCE HONOR

CHARLOTTE — High Point University’s Ava Welsh is among this week’s Big South Conference women’s lacrosse players of the week.

Welsh was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

Welsh recorded a season-high 15 saves against No. 19 Denver. She made six saves in the opening quarter and finished with a 46% save percentage on 43 shots faced. She also caused a turnover and collected one ground ball. Welsh has now registered back-to-back contests with 10 or more saves.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

BISHOP McGUINNESS BOYS, QUEEN’S GRANT

MATTHEWS — Fourth-seeded Bishop McGuinness lost 66-50 against top-seeded Queen’s Grant on Monday at Queen’s Grant in the fourth round of the NCHSAA 2A West boys basketball playoffs.

Arop Chom scored 15 points for the Villains (22-6), who trailed 35-20 at halftime. Bryce Chapman added nine points, while Thomas Thompson and Jones Chavis each had seven points.

OAK GROVE GIRLS, FOREST HILLS

MIDWAY — Top-seeded Oak Grove fell 65-62 against fifth-seeded Forest Hills on Monday at Oak Grove in the fourth round of the NCHSAA 5A West girls basketball playoffs.

Emma Hadley had 17 points for the Grizzlies (24-1). Kalin Favreau had 15 points and nine rebounds, while Cora Hadley had 14 points and 18 rebounds, and Victoria Lockamy had 10 points, seven assists and five steals.

BASEBALL

TRINITY, NORTHWOOD

TRINITY — Trinity won 11-1 against Northwood in nonconference baseball Monday at Trinity.

Cameron Hill, Walker Parrish and Quinn Johnson each had two hits for the Bulldogs (2-1). Nick Soles drove in three runs.

Peyton Williams earned the pitching win, striking out six while scattering three hits in six innings.

SOFTBALL

LEDFORD, EAST DAVIDSON

THOMASVILLE — Ledford rolled past county rival East Davidson 12-2 in six innings Monday in nonconference softball at Brown Middle.

Hailey Hoots homered twice and drove in three to lead the Panthers. Calleigh Swing doubled and drove in three, while Kaylee Atwood had two hits, including a double, and an RBI.

Atwood got the pitching win, striking out five in six innings.

Ledford improved to 1-1, while the Golden Eagles moved to 0-2.

BOYS TENNIS

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, WESTERN GUILFORD

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford lost 5-1 against Western Guilford in nonconference boys tennis Monday at Southwest.

Andrew Vo (6-1, 6-1) won in singles for the Cowboys (0-1).

BISHOP McGUINNESS, WHEATMORE

TRINITY — Bishop McGuinness topped Wheatmore 7-0 in nonconference boys tennis Monday at Wheatmore.

Luke Ansari (6-4, 6-2), Luke Holton (6-1, 6-2), Michael Molony (3-6, 6-4, 10-7), Devon Stalek (6-2, 6-4), Everett Smith (6-1, 6-0) and Jake Hauser (6-1, 6-0) won in singles.

Stalek/Hauser won in doubles (8-1).

Bishop opened its season 1-0, while the Warriors moved to 1-1.

OAK GROVE, WEST DAVIDSON

MIDWAY — Oak Grove won 8-1 against West Davidson in nonconference boys tennis Monday at Oak Grove.

Chris Morris (8-3), Tre Skeen (8-6), Eli Fulcher (8-0), Caden Reedy (8-1) and AJ Moreno (8-1) won in singles for the Grizzlies (1-1). Morris/Reedy (8-5), Skeen/Fulcher (8-1) and Moreno/Reece Meredith (8-2) won in doubles.
