Jahmyr Gibbs has immense relief that he is past the contract negotiations after securing a historic extension to remain with the Detroit Lions.
Gibbs is preparing for the fourth season of his budding career in the league with the Lions. He quickly made his way up the ranks to become one of the top running backs around, torching opponents with his elite speed and athleticism to rack up yards and touchdowns.
As Gibbs’ rookie deal comes to an end after 2026, the star running back inked a three-year extension that can give him as much as $75.75 throughout the term of the deal. He is guaranteed $51.5 million from the contract, surpassing Bijan Robinson’s recent extension with the Atlanta Falcons.
Gibbs spoke to media after finally securing the terms of his newest contract, per the Associated Press. He described the negotiations as stressful, being happy that he is past that phase and looking forward to playing football with ease for the Lions.
“This process has been extremely stressful,” Gibbs said Friday, one day after signing a three-year contract extension that made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history. “I just wanted to play ball. I missed being out there with my teammates and coaches and it’s just fun being out there now.”

The Lions certainly have firm confidence in Jahmyr Gibbs’ ceiling as an elite running back. Looking forward to his growth in the league, the squad is determined to return to the fold as a serious playoff contender.
Gibbs shined as the top option in the rushing attack, pulling off his second season of recording over 1,000 yards on the ground. Playing the entire campaign, he racked up 243 carries for 1,223 yards and 13 touchdowns. He was also active in the receiving game, making 77 catches for 616 yards and five touchdowns. His activity in the latter category are all career highs, showing off his explosiveness and versatility in the team’s offense.
The Lions will attempt to improve upon their 9–8 record from the previous season. Not only that, but they also hope to return to the playoffs after a one-year absence.
Detroit has its 2026 campaign go underway at home, hosting the New Orleans Saints in Week 1. That matchup takes place on Sept. 13 as kickoff commences at 1 p.m. ET.
