It is official.
Jahmyr Gibbs has signed his massive contract extension with the Detroit Lions, locking one of the NFL’s most explosive offensive weapons into Detroit’s long-term future.
The Lions announced the completed extension Friday, putting the finishing touch on a negotiation that dominated the opening stretch of training camp.
Gibbs’ new deal is for three years and $67.5 million in base value, with $51.5 million guaranteed. Incentives can push the contract to a maximum value of $75.75 million.
At $22.5 million per year in base value, Gibbs becomes the highest-paid running back in the NFL.
Detroit did not draft Gibbs 12th overall in 2023 to treat him like a replaceable running back.
Three seasons later, the Lions have put their money behind that belief.
Gibbs has produced 5,029 yards from scrimmage and 49 touchdowns through his first three NFL seasons while earning a Pro Bowl selection each year. His ability to run between the tackles, catch the football and turn a small crease into a touchdown has made him one of the league’s most dangerous offensive players.
The contract reflects that value.
Gibbs’ $22.5 million annual average edges the $22.25 million extension Bijan Robinson recently received from Atlanta and the $22 million annual deal Jonathan Taylor signed with Indianapolis.
Gibbs spent the opening portion of training camp in a hold-in while negotiations continued.
He remained at the facility, attended meetings and stayed involved with teammates, but did not initially participate in full practices. He eventually returned to limited on-field work Thursday as reports surfaced that Detroit and his representatives had made substantial progress toward an agreement.
