LIGONIER, Pa. – Ligonier Valley High School senior Sydney Hoyman started competing in track and field after racing her brother numerous times at home.
Adding obstacles while she ran was how Hoyman found her niche. She recently committed to join the Allegheny College track and field team as a hurdler and a sprinter.
"I joined track as a freshman because my dad did it in high school," Hoyman said. "I’ve always liked running and would always race my brother growing up, so it was the perfect sport. My father influenced me a lot because he always inspired me to join sports, and worked with me to be better at track."
She was enamored with the thought of becoming a Gator during her visit. Allegheny, located in Meadville, competes at the NCAA Division III level in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
"When I went to admitted students day, I met the coaches and saw what my experience would be like at Allegheny," Hoyman said. "Then before I left, I got a pen shaped like an alligator and knew I wanted to have a signing with it."
Hoyman will major in neuroscience. She competed in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles at Ligonier Valley. Hoyman will join fellow Ligonier Valley product, Gabriella Palmer, on the Allegheny team led by coach Jason Falvo.
Also competing in cross country and swimming, Hoyman earned most improved, intensity, four-year letterwinner, overall track athlete and the Pat Podlucky awards during her career.
In school, she was the student council treasurer, Students Against Destructive Decisions vice president, Future Business Leaders of America president, Interact Club member, three-time high school county band attendee, marching band, National Honors Society vice president, Spanish Honor Society secretary, senior class secretary and a member of theater.
Hoyman is the daughter of Phey and Sarah Hoyman.
