If anyone gets the East Valley Tribune delivered, I was wondering if there were any letters to the editor in today's (5/8/2003) edition about the ASU/Cards fiasco. There weren't any in the Republic that I saw.

It looks like the "pro-ASU" group is trying to get 500 letters done today at McDuffey's.

Might be a good chance to test your wrtiing skills by sending one in with an opposing point of view - both papers in town tend to balance off issues by running both "pro" and "con" letters.

From Today's Paper

Cards deserve better

How many of your readers know that the Arizona Cardinals are demanding $21 million from ASU, which the university claims will bankrupt its athletic department? Probably most of them.

How many of your readers know that legally, the Cardinals are more than likely in the right - that ASU breached its contract? Probably fewer.

How many of your readers know that the Cardinals are reaching out to women and minority-owned businesses to do work on their new stadium? Probably very few, because the story was buried in the middle of the local section.

Why is it that when there's a story that makes the Cardinals look bad it's splashed across the front page, but when there's a story that makes them look good, it's hidden?

If The Republic would treat the Cardinals the way it treats the Valley's other major professional teams and give their good deeds the same level of coverage it does their foibles, maybe the fans would start giving them a break and perhaps even supporting them more.

Thanks, Wiz.

That article was right on. Once you get a certain reputation, like the Bidwills for being cheap, it becomes nearly impossible to change public perception. And let's face it, bashing the Bidwills/Cards makes for better copy, and more papers sold, than reporting on the good they are doing for the community.

Nice to see, you're right Renz. Specifics on sending a letter to the Republics Sports Page, if you are so inclined:

Letters should be addressed to:

Your Turn, c/o Sports
The Arizona Republic
200 E. Van Buren St.
Phoenix, AZ 85004.

They also may be sent by fax to (602) 444-8686

or by e-mail to [email protected]

All letters must include a signature (or full name if e-mailed), address and phone number for confirmation purposes. Writers will be identified in the paper by their name and city of residence only. All letters are subject to editing.

Another nice effort

ASU-Cardinals dispute is sad
May. 21, 2003 12:00 AM

The ongoing community heartburn surrounding the signage issue at Sun Devil Stadium is nothing more than a private business dispute gone public.

For the people to turn it into a public controversy is self-serving and troubling.

ASU's attempt to get out of a signed agreement with its tenant, the Arizona Cardinals, is unseemly. Are these the ethics and methods our local institution of higher learning is teaching its students? Is dishonorable ethos now the university's mission?

Judging by the recent classless, unbecoming, incendiary comments of ASU's director of athletics, Gene Smith, which only fueled controversy and heightened discord, the university is succeeding! -

That's the best letter I've seen so far!

Gene Smith is a disgrace to the University, using those petty little remarks. ASU needs to do the "right" thing, and pay what they owe.

Take your medicine, ASU

May. 29, 2003

Once I was caught in a speed trap by a local officer of the law.

Upon pulling over, I began to express my disgust at the ordeal. I explained to the officer that it was unfair to hide in my neighborhood, around corners, to fine hard-working citizens. Furthermore, I told the officer that I was a taxpayer and that I was paying her salary.

When I had finished my complaint the officer responded by saying, "That's all very interesting, sir. I am writing you a citation for traveling 11 mph over the speed limit. You broke the law, please sign here and take your ticket like a man!"

Legal arbitration has ruled that Arizona State University broke the agreement it had with the Arizona Cardinals. ASU, take it like a man!
