LAKE NORDEN, S.D. (KELO) — The city of Lake Norden recognized its longtime amateur baseball manager, Burt Tulson, last weekend by renaming their home field in his honor.
“Rarely can you do something, a passion that you have at nine years old, at age 79 years old,” said Tulson’s daughter Trish.
Burt Tulson has spent the last 61 years of his life at the ballpark in Lake Norden, and now the place he loves so dearly will bear his name forever as “Burt Tulson Field at Memorial Park.”
“I don’t do this to get honored, but after all these years they decided to do this and I am amazed. I am thankful to god that he put the right people around me all the time in my life,” Burt Tulson said.
Burt got his start on the Lakers as a player back in 1965 as an 18-year old fresh out of high school.
“I had did well against Lake Norden playing for Bryant, and they asked me to come and play, and I said, you want me?” Tulson joked.
Burt played for 10 seasons before also taking over manager duties in 1976.
He says over 51 years he’s learned managing an amateur baseball team is far more than just picking the starting nine.
“We just do it for community. It’s not all about baseball, you know that. It’s important that we try to make things better than when we found them, and that’s about the field here too, and try to make the community better,” Tulson said.
With the years of service and hard work he’s put into the field, dedication day was a time for Burt to reflect on everyone who helped him get to this point.
“My name’s up there, but my name could be anybody’s name. My name doesn’t mean that much. It means that all these people, volunteers, put their time in so I could get my name up there,” Burt said.
The people who helped the most? Burt’s family.
He’s been blessed with a wonderful wife Linda, who’s been there for 56 of the 61 years and has run the concession stand for the last 30.
The couple has been blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters, all of whom Burt coached growing up.
“Baseball is the means, but really love is the fruit of this, and I’ve really seen that in my life, and so I’m just so grateful for that inspiration that my dad has given to me, and continues to give to me, but not just me, to many,” said Burt’s daughter Amy.
Burt’s son Mick still plays for Lake Norden today and he was so proud to see his father’s name written on the outfield wall.
“This will live through generations of kids, and they’ll say, and know who Burt Tulson is, and that’s really cool,” Mick said.
