New England Patriots legend Julian Edelman has a simple solution for the team when it comes to the ongoing contract talks with cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
"Get him paid," Edelman said on Games with Names. "...They're figuring it out."
Gonzalez is technically entering the final year of his rookie contract, but the Patriots picked up the fifth-year option on his original deal, which means it can be extended through 2027.
However, the former All-Pro and current Pro Bowler is set to make $4.8 million in 2026. That is well below the market price for one of the best corners in the NFL. It's hard to envision Gonzalez agreeing to suit up at that price tag, no matter how much he loves being in New England.
But how much money is Gonzalez looking to make in a long-term extension?
Trent McDuffie reset the market in the offseason by signing a deal worth $31 million annually with the Los Angeles Rams, and Seattle Seahawks' star cornerback Devon Witherspoon could raise that price even higher when agreeing to his eventual extension.
Is this a situation where Gonzalez wants to be the highest-paid corner in the NFL, or would he be willing to accept a deal that puts him more in line with that group? More importantly, how far are the Patriots willing to take it before they have to start considering other options?
Training camp is right around the corner, and so could be the answers to many of those questions.
