New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez isn't holding out from mandatory minicamp, but he also hasn't participated in full-speed drills and competitive 11-on-11s.
The star defensive back is currently eligible for a new contract, and the two sides have been trying to agree on an extension. Gonzalez is set to earn $4.8 million in 2026, which is unfathomable for a player of his caliber. He is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL, and he could have a chance to reset the market at the position with his next contract.
It's hard to envision him participating fully without long-term security in place.
"That's something that Christian and I have talked about and making sure that the most important thing is that we're on the same page, which we are," Vrabel told reporters on Thursday.
It isn't personal for Gonzalez. It's just business.
Vrabel clearly understands that side of the coin, given his ongoing discussions with the former All-Pro and Pro Bowl defensive back. With that said, there is hope that the two sides will agree at some point to avoid dragging things out and allowing it to get ugly.
Gonzalez wants to stay in New England, and the Patriots clearly want him to stay. But the numbers have to make sense for both parties for a deal to work.
