Predicting How Christian Gonzalez-Patriots OTA Spat Ends originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
While most New England Patriots fans wait to see if/when the team trades for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown, there's a second storyline in Foxborough, Mass. that needs monitoring as well.
Cornerback Christian Gonzalez continues to be a no-show for the team's OTAs at Gillette Stadium. The main issue is money. Namely, Gonzalez believes he deserves a raise and so far, the Patriots haven't been willing to get a deal done.
So how is this going to play out? Masslive.com's Sean McAdam has an idea.
" Get ready for a long, drawn-out dance involving Christian Gonzalez and the Patriots," McAdam wrote Sunday. "Eventually, a deal will get done for the Pro Bowl cornerback and at a number that’s pretty easy to predict — somewhere around $30 million annually. Until then, count on more absences from OTAs and the expected back-and-forth between the two camps."
"As one of the game’s premier cornerbacks, he’s looking to be paid," Masslive.com's Karen Guregian said. "How much it will take to satisfy Gonzalez is another story. Currently, Trent McDuffie is the highest paid corner at $31 million a year. How much beyond that is Gonzalez seeking? The assumption is $35 million at the very least."
Teammate Marcus Jones talked Sunday about Gonzalez's absence.
“We support him and the organization. … I’ve been in the situation of learning how contract negotiations goes. At the end of the day they want what’s best for them and he wants what’s best for him,” Jones said, via Masslive.com's Mark Daniels.
The 23-year-old Gonzalez is a cornerstone piece of head coach Mike Vrabel's defense. Gonzalez earned his first Pro Bowl bid last season and was a second-team All-Pro in 2024.
