Joe Theismann knows a thing or two about playing quarterback in Washington. One of the most successful quarterbacks in Redskins/Commanders history, Theismann played in 167 games for the burgundy and gold, starting 124, winning a Super Bowl and an NFL MVP award.

Since retirement, Theismann remains close to the franchise, often visiting practices and doing work for the team's preseason broadcasts. Theismann is also a frequent guest of some of the local Washington, D.C., radio stations, including, most recently, with 106.7 The Fan's Grant Paulsen and the "Take Command" podcast.

Of course, Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels was a topic of conversation. Theismann is a big fan of Daniels, and he believes the third-year quarterback will thrive under new offensive coordinator David Blough.

"Because he was asked to run so much, he puts himself in harm's way quite a bit," Theismann said. "I think he's gonna work under center a little bit more, which will be great for him. He can get the ball out of his hands with one quick look. He doesn't have to hold onto it. It's gonna be hard to have free runners all the time when you're not in the shotgun all the time."

In his first two NFL seasons, Daniels played primarily out of the shotgun in former coordinator Kliff Kingsbury's offense. He also played mostly out of the shotgun during his final two years at LSU. The Commanders believe the new offensive scheme will only help Daniels grow as a more complete passer.

Theismann also likes the preexisting relationship Daniels has with Blough.

"I think David Blough's offense is really gonna be good for Jayden Daniels. The other thing, too, remember he didn't play the last month of the season. But he spent a lot of time with Coach Blough. Spent a lot of time on another field, working on what they were gonna prepare to do this year in some way, shape, or form. I think whether Kliff was here or not, they were preparing him for a different style of offense, which I think will be extremely effective. Patrick Mahomes under center more. We see Jared Goff under center more. Caleb Williams, under center a bit more. The play action is so much easier when you're under center, and then your drops, your protection, all of those things work together."

Theismann was outstanding in his analysis, which is unsurprising. It's something he's done. He played under center throughout his career. The primary reason Washington parted ways with Kingsbury was due to a difference in philosophy. The Commanders wanted Daniels to grow in a more traditional NFL offense, which was a stark contrast from Kingsbury's fast-break, no-huddle attack.
