The Boston Celtics' situation with Jaylen Brown has remained a talking point after the team and their All-Star guard were in the thick of trade talks for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo. While the Miami Heat ultimately won out in the Giannis sweepstakes, the Celtics' situation regarding Brown's future has become tough, and many insiders believe the team will trade him this offseason. Although several teams have been mentioned as possible suitors for Brown, two new options have reportedly been added to the mix: the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans.
This news was first reported by Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, who stated the Rockets and Pelicans have "held trade dialogue with Boston."
Brown's fit with either team could quickly become a talking point around the league, although Siegel added that it's unknown which players or draft assets have been discussed in a potential deal. He did highlight that the Celtics have had interest in Trey Murphy III, who's been a frequent name on the NBA trade rumor mill this offseason.
This is where the debate gets a bit more interesting, as various NBA analysts argued that Brown might want the task of taking on essentially his "own" team. If that is the case, the Rockets wouldn't make a ton of sense, but from Boston's perspective, they could likely put together a solid deal that would net at least one or two strong players who can make an immediate impact.
As for the Pelicans, the interest in Murphy is significant. The 26-year-old, who was the No. 17 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, is coming off the best two-year stretch of his young career and has progressively improved each season. After averaging 21.2 points on 45.4% shooting (36.1% from three-point range) in 2024-25, he followed that up with marks of 21.5 points on 47% shooting and 37.9% from beyond the arc. Murphy has also averaged 5.1 and 5.7 rebounds over that two-year span while averaging over 35 minutes per game.
If the Celtics' reported interest in Murphy is real, that could easily be a starting point in trade conversations involving Brown, although it'd be worth monitoring what all New Orleans would need to include to make the deal happen.
