Former two-time NFL General Manager Scot McCloughan recently directed sharp criticism at the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft.

“I think the quarterback from Alabama is overdrafted,” McCloughan said on the Team 980 in D.C., via Valentina Martinez of the New York Post. “But it’s the position alone, you know. I think, not being a guru, but he’s like J.J. McCarthy. He’s like Mac Jones. He’s a career backup.”

Thursday night’s World Cup knockout-round match between Croatia and Portugal revealed, for better or worse, the extreme precision of the VAR system that FIFA has embraced. Watching it work, it becomes harder to understand how and why the NFL hasn’t already done the same.

Yes, the NFL now employs technology to determine whether the offense has reached the line to gain. (Which seems to be used less frequently than the no-tech sticks-and-chain — and maybe an index card — approach.) But the all-important spot of the ball continues to be determined the old-fashioned way: by trusting the best guess of the official who claims most convincingly to know the right location.

Supposedly, they’re working on it. They need to get it done.

I am firmly on the fence on this issue... on one hand, you figure...that with all the tech we have available a multi billion dollar industry can afford to stay on the cutting edge...place a mono filament grid under the turf and corresponding RFID identifiers in the skin of the ball...and know exactly where the ball stopped moving forward...with adjustments for exactly when the knee was down, etc....I mean..the tech is there...

But on the other hand...as much as the gamblers hate it...a huge part of the historical "Rivalry" between teams over the years has been spurred by how the ref placed the ball...or what call was made when..that whole " Human Error" thing.... it has motivated more fan fights than anything else in the game... and I like it

But again, from a fan perspective... NFL officials really suck...seems ever since they won their union battle a few years back they just stopped working to improve their craft...and as a fan we want them to make the right call..to get it right more often than not...I mean get it right on stuff like holding,...ball possession, stuff like that...and it might be easier for them to do that if they dont have to expend much energy worrying about where the ball goes.

I agree, the times ball placement changed the outcome of a game is comparatively nothing compared to the sudden PI or holding calls that have been allowed to go on during the first 45 minutes of the game. The first quarter is when the officials set the parameters of what's going to be called....not all of a sudden in the 4th.

I'm out! Bed time......Happy 4th of July and Thanks to all that have served or are still serving The United States of America....

The Fourth of July is one of the slowest NFL news days of the year. Every year, I remember the shocking news that emerged in the early afternoon of July 4, 2009.

Former Titans and Ravens quarterback Steve McNair had been murdered.

The details were confusing. It was quickly ruled a murder-suicide; McNair was shot by his 20-year-old girlfriend, who then shot herself. The woman, Sahel Kazemi, had reportedly never owned a gun. But McNair was execution-style, with two shots to the chest and two to the head.

Questions lingered regarding whether someone else was involved, but the case was never re-opened. In 2018, SI.com released a podcast series on the McNair murder.

This weekend it was all Brandon Aiyuk. LOL

He made fun of Jayden Daniels constantly hiding behind his mom - likely some truth in there. Definitely a way to guarantee the Commanders do not sign you. LOL

Antonio Brown on Brandon Aiyuk’s recent social media rants:

"Even I'll admit, he's been a little off the rails lately."
