No, it's not a Sony hard drive, just due to the limited space inside, it HAS to be a notebook variety. Notebook HD's are traditionally smaller capacity and cost more.
I think I might have found someone who was able to put a traditional 3.5" (notebook are 2.5") hard drive in there, but can't remember the details. The only way I know for sure you can use a regular one is have the case open (or mod it) and run the wire out of the case.
That would be weird for the One not to accept USB 2.0. There is NO technical reason for that. It would be something Microsoft actively had to not allow for that to be the case.
I don't know if this helps but I did just find this...apparently there is something that will convert a 2.0 HD past the Microsoft limitation.

But that said, it's possible it's not necessary as this is pretty old and perhaps Microsoft updated it to allow 2.0. That's just really weird.
Though by searching for that I did find out you can hook up TWO external hd's to the Xbox One.
