Comic Book About Pope Is Hit In Poland
December 3, 2004

A comic book that chronicles John Paul II's life from his birth in Poland to his rise to pope has just been released in his native country.

The Polish publisher says the colorful 80-page comic "From Wadowice to Rome" -- that went on sale in Polish stores in late November -- has been selling well.

Jolanta Kochniarczyk, a publicist for the publishers, said it's a biography that reads well like a good novel, adding "it's not just dry facts."

Kochniarczyk said it also talks about important values. She said initial fears that the public might take offense at telling the pontiff's story in the comic form were for naught.

There's been no criticism, Kochniarczyk said, and the young readers were delighted with the drawings and the words.

This isn't the first time the pope has appeared in comic book form.

In 1982, Marvel Comics -- known for the likes of such superhero stalwarts as "Spider-Man," "The Hulk," "The Fantastic Four" and the "X-Men," adapted the story of his life into a 64-page biography with full color images, called "The Life of Pope John Paul II."
