Netflix is the place to be on Friday night as legendary climber Alex Honnold attempts one of his boldest ascents yet.
Honnold is set to free solo (meaning a climb without ropes or protective equipment) Taipei 101, a 508-meter (1,667-foot) skyscraper in Taiwan. The event will be broadcast live on Netflix under the title "Skyscraper Live."
Taipei 101 was scaled by French climber Alain Robert shortly after it opened in 2004, but he did so with ropes at the insistence of the Taiwanese government. Now, Honnold looks to become the first person to free solo the building.
Honnold rose to prominence in 2017 when he made the first free solo of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, which was the subject of the 2018 documentary "Free Solo." Now, he's attempting something potentially even more wild.
While Honnold's ascent of Taipei 101 will be streamed live — the first live Netflix event outside of the United States — that isn't exactly true. The airing will feature a 10-second live delay, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.
The delay is in place so the broadcast can cut away if anything goes wrong with Honnold's climb. Hopefully, it won't be an issue that comes into play as Honnold seeks to make history once again.
