Alex Honnold is currently in Taipei starring in a Netflix live special titled Skyscraper Live, an unprecedented broadcast in which he is attempting to free solo the 101-story Taipei 101 tower without ropes or safety gear. The event, originally scheduled for last night, was postponed due to rainy weather conditions.

Speaking from the city amid steady rain, Honnold addressed the delay with his usual calm honesty. “I sadly will not get to climb the building today because it’s raining,” he said. “Climbing is always at the mercy of nature. That’s just how it goes.”

For a free solo ascent, even light moisture makes conditions unsafe. “You can’t climb a skyscraper when it’s raining,” Honnold added, underscoring the reality of attempting such a climb live.

Rather than frustration, his tone was reflective. Gesturing toward the skyline behind him, Honnold called Taipei a beautiful city and shared plans to spend the day hiking and exploring instead. He encouraged viewers to tune in again tonight at the same time, when the climb has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. ET.

“We’ll just kind of see what nature allows,” Honnold said. He closed by thanking fans for their support, calling the experience of being in Taipei and seeing the building up close “incredible,” rain or not.
