Movie-A-Day #223: Revenge of the Nerds

Lord.. it's been awhile since I did my last "movie-a-day".... In fact.. this is my 4th time over-all participating in it, so I've already done most of my favorite movies.... Plus, several already had been done which makes it more complex to choose, so I figured I'd do some other personal faves of mine that either have been long forgotten or no one has ever heard of before.... The first is essentially a classic which generate some reaction:

REVENGE OF THE NERDS - 1984
Two lifelong friends (portrayed by Robert Carradine and Anthony Edwards) have finally gone off to college. Unfortunately, these guys are two of the biggest nerds on the face of the earth. Combine that with the fact that they are freshmen, and you've got trouble. They meet with immediate resentment, getting thrown out of their dorm and being forced to live in the gym! Among the tormentors is none other than Ted McGinley of Happy Days and Married With Childen fame. Fortunately, they aren't the only freshman class outcasts. Joining forces with a loser (Curtis Armstrong), a black homosexual (Larry B. Scott), a Japanese exchange student (Brian Tochi), a dork with a bad haircut and even worse eyesight (Timothy Busfield), and a pre-teen genius (Andrew Cassese), the nerds plot revenge against their tormentors.

Personal Reaction: First, it's already been 21-years since this movie was initially playing in the theatres... I remember seeing in cable circa '85 and it became one of my regular staple movies... One that I've seen numerous times and it never spoils on me.....

What an ensemble cast....An excellent mixture of some up-and-comers and others who had made some slight impact in the entertainment industry... Hilarious to see what became of Anthony Edwards on how his career significantly evolved... how Larry Armstrong soon would have a co-starring role on "Moonlighting", Ted McGinley was in transition from being on both "Love Boat"/"Happy Days" and a few years later would make a huge comeback on "Married With Children".... Although... I guess the most significant was how an extreme unknown had a bit part (but memorable) and yet ended-up making an immense impact on sitcom television and also in other roles... that of course being John Goodman..... Edit: Also.. shouldnt forget Timothy Busfield who exhibited quite versatility in all his roles throughout his film/television career....

The humor never gets dull whatsoever...of course...as I got older I began to grasp/appreciate some of the dialogue a little more....

It's unfortunate though that the legacy of this movie has been somewhat tarnished due to all the subsequent sequels, but it shouldnt since Revenge of the Nerds will forever be a cult classic and one movie that cannot be entirely replicated.....

Those of us that attended UofA have a special place in our hearts for this movie--the entire film was shot on the UofA campus, or right next to it.

Aaah, to see Old Main again, and the Bear Down gym...

I loved this movie as a kid. I watched it at my 11 year-old birthday party lol. Definitely a different time.

There are sooo many hilarious scenes and funny characters. Many inappropriate parts of course, but that stuff kinda went over my head as a kid.

The sequels were awful, especially 3 and 4.
