For the second straight season, Stillwater will play for a state title on the final day of the campaign.
For the second straight season, the Ponies downed conference rival East Ridge in the state semifinals to get there.
Stillwater controlled play throughout en route to an 8-2 victory over the third-seeded Raptors in Thursday’s semifinal at Roseville Area High School. The Ponies fell 9-7 to Edina in last year’s title game, and haven’t lost since.
Stillwater will meet top-seeded Farmington or Wayzata in the state final on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at White Bear Lake Area High School. Stillwater and Farmington entered the tournament as the state’s only two undefeated teams.
The Ponies jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first half Thursday, with all five goals coming from different players.
Vaughn Fatheree got the scoring started with a snipe from the perimeter. Jonah Johnston made it 4-0 late in the opening frame as he knifed through the Raptors’ defense in transition to get to the front of the net and bury a goal.
Keiran Jones made it 5-0 as he put away a shot by the net after a nasty feed from Brady Schneider.
East Ridge responded with a pair of goals — one each from Bradley Johnson and Kaden Baron — but the Ponies reclaimed momentum with a goal from Bennett Martin late in the half to make it 6-2.
That’s where the score stood for most of the third quarter until Robert Appert IV scored his second goal of the game to extend the Stillwater lead to five.
Schneider scored his second goal of the game — and 41st of the season — in the fourth for the second-seeded Ponies (18-0).
Stillwater handed the Raptors (16-2) their only two losses this season, with the other coming via a 17-6 final in late April.
East Ridge generated pressure at numerous points in the affair as it attempted to claw back into the game, but Stillwater goalie Casey Mork delivered timely saves throughout to keep the Raptors at bay.
