The Georgia Bulldogs (44-12, 23-7 SEC) won the SEC during the regular season and are looking to win the SEC Tournament. Georgia baseball faces the Florida Gators in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament on Saturday. The winner of the Georgia-Florida game will advance to the SEC championship.
Georgia has earned a favorable path in the NCAA Tournament and could improve it further if they can win the SEC championship. Georgia lost just one series during conference play (at home against Florida) and has a chance to avenge that series loss in the SEC Tournament.
Georgia is predicted to be the No. 3 national seed in Baseball America's updated NCAA Tournament projections. The only teams projected as higher seeds are No. 1 UCLA and No. 2 Georgia Tech.
Georgia would host the Athens Regional with the projected No. 31 team, the Arizona State Sun Devils, as the second-best team in the regional. The Virginia Cavaliers and St. John's Red Storm are also in Georgia's projected regional. "St. John’s is playing the best baseball in the Big East right now," Baseball America said. Other potential regional opponents for UGA include projected No. 30 Oklahoma, No. 29 Miami, and No. 32 Liberty.
The SEC is projected to host almost half of the regionals in the NCAA Tournament. Seven of the top-16 seeds are SEC teams. Overall, 12 SEC teams are predicted to make the NCAA Tournament, which is the most of any conference.
The Bulldogs would be projected to host No. 14 national seed Mississippi State in the super regionals. Georgia already swept Mississippi State on the road this season and beat the other Bulldogs in the SEC Tournament quarterfinals. UGA is 4-0 against Mississippi State this year and would be confident going into that series.
Georgia and manager Wes Johnson is looking to return to the College World Series for the seventh time in school history. Georgia has not made the College World Series since 2008.
