The Boston Red Sox ruled Major League Baseball during the 2000s and 2010s, winning four World Series during a 15-year span from 2004 to 2018.

The last few years have not been as fruitful, however, producing just two playoff appearances, no championships and three last-place finishes for the Red Sox since 2019.

Boston is no longer the powerhouse it used to be and seems to have lost its way a little bit, especially with the team in last place again this season.

During his appearance on "Foul Territory" on Monday, former MLB All-Star Whit Merrifield lamented the current state of the Red Sox.

It feels like the Red Sox have lost their allure, says @WhitMerrifield.

"It no longer has that allure, and it sucks and it's weird," Merrifield said. "When the Red Sox are good, baseball's better. If you're the Boston Red Sox and you want a right-handed power bat...you should go get the best right-handed power bat on the market. And there shouldn't be anybody that can take that away from you, and they're not doing that."

To Merrifield's point, the Red Sox have pulled back in free agency in recent years, often getting outbid by other teams and failing to acquire big stars. They're not as aggressive as they used to be, and they've paid the price for it on the field.

Their recent struggles and instability have also made them a less desirable destination for free agents. As Merrifield said, Boston used to be a place where players want to come play and win championships. Now, playing for the Red Sox is no longer as attractive as it once was.

If Boston wants to restore that appeal, it needs to start winning consistently and become a championship-caliber organization again.
