How Ump Changing Call Mid-Play Helped Red Sox, Confused White Sox originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The third-base umpire signaled foul ball.
Seconds later, he pointed fair instead. Which was it? It was a result that boosted the Boston Red Sox and left the Chicago White Sox confused.
On Tuesday night, it was one of the weirdest moments across all of Major League Baseball.

Why did ump change his call mid-play?
The scene started with runners on first and second, Boston leading 4-1 in the top of the ninth in Chicago, and Willson Contreras at the plate.
Contreras turned on a pitch to yank it down the third-base line.
The third-base umpire pointed toward foul territory on his initial move, to signal that the baseball hadn't stayed inside the bag.
Almost immediately, the ump realized he wanted to change his mind. He started pointing fair in a fervent manner to make sure everyone realized what had happened.
It wasn't obvious whether the umpire gave any signal to acknowledge a mistake, but the fact that he pointed so intensely certainly suggests he realized his error:

The Red Sox lead may have been safe at 4-1 with Aroldis Chapman set to come out of the bullpen.
Insurance runs never hurt anyone, though, and so the Red Sox will take this, even if it came in a way that was highly unusual.
