Trade Rumor Links Red Sox To All-Star Infielder, Power Bat originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
"Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies."
Andy Dufresne's letter to Red in "The Shawshank Redemption" comes to mind Monday when pondering the Boston Red Sox.
The club finally built some momentum at home over the weekend by taking two of three games this weekend at Fenway Park from the Texas Rangers. Yes, the Red Sox still sit in last place in the American League East, 13.5 games behind the first-place New York Yankees. But Boston is just five games back in the AL Wild Card standings.
If Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow wants to double down on the club, adding a power bat before the Aug. 3 trade deadline is a must. So the latest buzz from the rumor mill bears tracking.
" The chances the Astros trade Yordan Alvarez are 'about zero,'" the New York Post's Jon Heyman reports.
"However, if the Astros fall, Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes could go," Heyman adds. "Walker is already drawing interest, and the Red Sox remain interested in Paredes (Walker might fit them, too, as well as his old Diamondbacks team)."
Paredes, 27, could be a good fit for the Red Sox. The two-time All-Star can play all over the infield and has nine home runs this season.
According to Spotrac, Paredes' contract includes a club option for the 2027 season at $13.35 million.
But the better bat belongs to Walker, who's tied for fifth in the AL with 18 home runs this year. The 35-year-old slugger also owns three Gold Glove Awards and could rotate between first base and designated hitter with the red-hot Willson Contreras, who leads the Red Sox with 16 home runs.
Even better, Walker's price tag shouldn't be too high since he will be a free agent at the end of the season.
If the Red Sox want to improve their playoff chances, which currently sit at 15.7% according to FanGraphs, trading for one of the Astros' bats would be a wise move.
