Here's everything Houston Texans second-year wide receiver Jayden Higgins said following Day 5 of training camp, including his relationship with quarterback C.J. Stroud, the growth of the offense in Year 2 under Nick Caley and going up against Kamari Lassiter during drills.
Question: On his growth heading into his second season
Jayden Higgins: "I feel like I'm just being more comfortable in the offense. Second year around, so I know what I'm looking for out there as far as the certain routes that we have. I know the adjustments I can make. I would just say how comfortable I'm getting."
Q: On how going against CB Kamari Lassiter and CB Derek Stingley Jr. in practice helped build his confidence
Higgins: "Super quickly. You have to go out there and compete with those guys. I always say, 'Practice is like game day going against them.' Those guys come out there and compete every day and I'm going to do the same."
Q: On what he worked on during the offseason
Higgins: “I wanted to get better at everything, honestly. I think the biggest thing is just being comfortable in the offense. Knowing the offense, knowing what I have to do. Other than that, just the little intricacies as a wide receiver. I want to break down better; I want to get in and out of routes and stretch the field."
Q: On what C/G Keylan Rutledge has brought to the team mentality-wise
Higgins: "Mentality-wise, he's feisty. He goes out there and wants to dominate every play. He's going to go out there and make a lot of plays for us, block for us hard. He brings that certain energy that we need on this offense."
Q: On the biggest transition going into his second season with Offensive Coordinator Nick Caley
Higgins: "I think Coach Caley trying to move me around a little bit. He's trying to put me in different positions to ultimately make plays. We want to create a mismatch out there."
Q: On what is going through his mind during pre-snap offense and the difference between it in the NFL versus college
Higgins: "It's a lot more, honestly. We have a lot of different side adjustments. Our coach does a really good job of making sure we identify our pre-snap triangle. The biggest thing is you want to be able to go out there and be able to play fast. That's all it comes down to. Go out there, play fast and make plays."
Q: On if there was a point during his rookie season where it just clicked for him
Higgins: "I wouldn't necessarily say a point. I would say I just grew over the year. I got more comfortable with it. Also, C.J. believing in me out there. The more comfortable you get with it, the more tasks you get."
Q: On the process with getting on the same page with QB C.J. Stroud
Higgins: "It's been good. It's a long process. It takes a lot of time. A lot of times, it's not even out here, it's in the film room watching certain things with him, certain leverages, how he wants me to take certain angles. It's kind of a thing that's always evolving."
Q: On rookie WR Lewis Bond and the rookie class
Higgins: “Lewis has been doing a really good job out there, making a lot of plays. It's the same thing with him, he's getting really comfortable with the offense. I feel like all the rookies that we have, they've done a great job. They're all super smart. They all can come in and play right away."
Q: On if he has noticed anything different about QB C.J. Stroud this offseason going into Training Camp
Higgins: "I would say C.J. is always the same guy. He comes in here, he has a great mentality and lifts up the team. He comes in here and wants to work. I guess the haircut is the biggest thing. That change for him. C.J. has been the same guy day in and day out."
Q: On WR Jaylin Noel working his way back to practice
Higgins: "I think the biggest thing with him is always just making jokes. Making him smile, make sure his morale is high. At the end of the day, he's going to take care of himself and he's going to be ready to go out there on the field when his time comes."
Q: On what changed about his offseason regiment to put on muscle;
Higgins: "I think just having time and just being in the building. I was able to be here instead of combine training, trying to run a 40. I was able to be here and lift with the guys. The coaching staff did a great job."
