Here's everything Houston Texans Pro Bowl wide receiver Nico Collins said following Day 4 of training camp, including his thoughts on C.J. Stroud's growth, the wide receiver rooms and the changes made to the offensive personnel under second-year offensive coordinator Nick Caley.
Question: What's his thoughts entering his sixth Training Camp
Nico Collins: "This is my sixth camp right here. It's a blessing to get six of them. It doesn’t get any better than that. It's a blessing for sure. It's a blessing to get on this grass with my teammates and to get better every single day. You have to be grateful for every opportunity.”
Q: On WR Jayden Higgins’ development
Collins: “He’s a dog. You see the work he's been putting in, it’s showing up on the grass field. He has all the tools in the world. He's going to be the face of this franchise at some point. His playmaking ability, his size, he has all the tools in the world. I can't wait to see him rock out this year. It's going to be exciting.”
Q: On his takeaways from todays practice
Collins: “It's competitive. Iron sharpens iron every day. It's supposed to be hard. It's not supposed to be easy. You're not supposed to go out here and just go run under the ball. They’re not supposed to make it easy. You're supposed to compete. You're supposed to get off the ball, make it hard for each other so that on Sundays, it's easy and you're not thinking about it.”
Q: On evaluating the offense compared to the defense in practice
Collins: “No, you just have to keep a positive pace. The defense sends blitzes and then offense, we have to see it. We have to read and react with hot routes. As an offense, we have to adapt to it and the defense, they can continue to do what they do. In order to get better on that, we have to find the voids, the hot routes, identify the safeties, pre-snap reads, there’s a lot coming to it. The defense, they're the best. That’s what you want as an offense. You want to go against the best every single day. There's no better feeling than this. We’re going against them every single day, sharpening the blade, so that on Sundays, we're humming. Day four, it's supposed to be hard. It's supposed to be hot. That's the point of camp. That's what makes it fun.”
Q: On whether the mindset of the offensive line and tight end has gotten stronger
Collins: “Yeah, for sure. We have some dogs in there that are hungry. You have the offensive line that's trying to make plays and the defensive line trying to get to the ball. That's what you want as an offense and a defense. You want guys that are competing, especially in the trenches. It gets real in there. Hats off to those boys in there for competing every single down and continuing to make plays.”
Q: On C/G Keylan Rutledge being extra physical with the defense during practice
Collins: “I like it. I definitely I like it. You want to have some dogs on the offensive side. You have to have that, it's football. You have to have some heart. You have to have some dog about yourself. You don't want to go out here and get rolled over like a puppy. You have to have some heart about yourself. It's football. you have to bring it. It's a blessing to come out here every day and to compete against the best defense in the league. You have no choice but to get better. If you lose on the reps, cool. Next rep, bank it. Let's move on.”
Q: On what he worked on this offseason
Collins: “My mental. Just getting away from football a little bit. Harping on my family and my loved ones. I was just disconnecting for a minute and now I'm here. I feel like I really needed that because once you're in it, you're in it for the long run. I had a great offseason. I was here for the most part and I was training in the facility. It was good just to be in the facility and a little bit in the heat. It was also good to get away for a little bit as well. I'm here now. I have a great mindset, I’m feeling good. I'm just ready to play on Sundays.”
Q: On whether he will wear a guardian cap this season
Collins: “No, I’m not going to wear it. I feel like for a wideout, you have to be able to track the ball. You have to be able to turn your head and see where the ball's going. If you can't find the ball in the air, then everybody's going to talk badly about you. I feel like it's good and all but at the end of the day, you have to work on your neck strengthening. You have to work on your spine. You have to work on your back. It’s the little muscles in your neck and it’s the little contact. It's football at the end of the day, that's what happens. As a defensive player, I can see that because consistently, you're making contact. For me, I don't have that much contact to my head so I won't be wearing it this year. I’ll just continue to work on my neck, my traps and my back. I’ll be strengthening the little muscles in my neck.”
Q: On the offense at this point this season compared to last season
Collins: “We're progressing for sure. We're getting better every single day. We're going against the number one defense in the league. This is what you want to compete against every single day in the heat when you're hot and tired. Your legs are burning and they’re blitzing; that's when you want to be your best. I feel like as an offense right now, we're humming. We're continuing to put the pieces together and continuing to build every single day.”
Q: On WR Lewis Bond
Collins: “Yeah, ‘Lew’ is a dog. He's picking up things. He's getting open in the slot, making plays. He has all the tools in the world. He's going to continue to learn from us, continue to build and continue to make plays for us. He's going to be special for sure.”
Q: On what he has seen from QB C.J. Stroud
Collins: “He's poised and he's a leader. He's a leader on his team and we all know that. We have his back 100% of the way. I can't wait to see him rock out this year. I can't wait; it's going to be fun. It's going to be exciting for the entire team. He has all the tools in the world; we all know that. I can't wait to see my dog rock out. I can't wait to see it.”
