Here's everything Houston Texans running back David Montgomery said following Day 2 of training camp, including his thoughts on the new-look offense, his relationship with head coach DeMeco Ryans and more.
Question: On what he brings to the Houston Texans after being traded for in the offseason
David Montgomery: "I have played for a little bit. I think I'd say that the thing I bring most is experience. I've been around – since I've been in some special groups. I've been in some opportunities and some places where it was really good and other places where it wasn't the best either. You kind of take things as things go, but I think I'd just say bring an experience and bring who I am to a team that's already special."
Q: On how having a business-like approach off the field helps him on the football
Montgomery: "I think it gives you an extra edge when you're facing opponents. The game is fun and it's supposed to be, but it's very intentional always. I try to be proactive with everything that I do, so when I get to game days, I feel free, I can play free and I can play the way I played when I was a kid. I think that comes with preparation, making sure you're taking care of your business on and off the field, but doing stuff when you're not in the building as well. I think just trying to find extra nicks and things that can help you improve off the field is beneficial as well."
Q: On what he has seen from the pre-snap offense
Montgomery: "It's definitely improved. It's not where we want it to be at because I have high expectations because I know what this offense is capable of doing. We've definitely taken some steps, but we still have a ways to go and we'll improve."
Q: On what is missing or needs to improve from the pre-snap offense
Montgomery: "I wouldn't say missing; I think it’s just being more accountable and us pushing each other more and having high expectations of knowing that it's the right way to do it. We're there; we just have to sharpen it up in a few places. [It's] early on in camp and everybody's still trying to learn chemistry and figure each other out, but we're on the right track."
Q: On what he can bring to the running back room
Montgomery: "Yeah, just being available. I don't like to put titles on stuff, like bell cows, split. That stuff doesn't really matter because whoever's out there is going to be out there. I'm going to be out there, 'Woodrow' [Woody Marks] is going to be out there, ‘J-War' is going to be out there. Everybody's going to be out there, so again, just holding everybody else to the same expectations and knowing that we all don't have to be out there and whenever I'm out there, me ensuring that I'm holding the standard and whoever next, they carry the same thing and they raise it. Again, just being prepared for every moment, ensuring I'm doing things prehab wise and I'm out here conditioning as much as I can just so I can be ready."
Q: On the running back room relationships
Montgomery: "Everybody rocks with everybody. The position of a running back is already tough enough and we really don't get a lot of acknowledgement for the amount of stuff that we do. Everyone in the room who plays kind of understands how important it is for us to have appreciation for that position. Everybody in the room is so different, but we all bring different things to the table that we all can benefit from. I think putting different guys who are adamant and willing to learn and no one takes anything personal from the top to the bottom, like me being able to learn from Noah [Whittington] or Josh[Pitsenberger]or 'Ev' [Evan Hull], like me being selfless enough to say, 'Okay, you didn't like that or you didn't think I could do that? Okay, where can I improve with me playing eight years,' and I think it just takes a level of selflessness to where you can kind of be that way and if I can be that way, I know those guys can kind of return to things, so it's been fun, it's been a very fun room and I think we're going to do some special things."
Q: On what it is like going up against DE Will Anderson Jr. and DE Danielle Hunter
Montgomery: "I'm just happy that I'm on the same team as him now quite frankly and I'm on the same team as Danielle [Hunter] because they're both freaks. I think the first time I came out here and we were at OTAs and we were doing some team stuff and I'm watching the snap and I'm like, 'He's jumping offsides.' The whole time, he's not, he just gets off the ball super fast. Seeing somebody come in, he’s about his business and with him being a little bit younger and him carrying himself in a way to where he makes me want to get better. I love seeing Will go, I love seeing Danielle go, I love seeing that whole defense go, because it's going to force us on the other side of the ball to be better."
Q: On what about his game makes the offense better in the redzone
Montgomery: "Just being available, just ensuring that I'm accountable and my team and my coaches can count on me in every situation when we down there. That's not just the red zone; that's anywhere on the field. I think just me being ready and available for whatever opportunity presents itself."
On the expectations of the running back room and how they feel about the pressure
"I've never really been one to focus too much on pressures. At the end of the day, it's a game. It's fun – It's supposed to be fun. I've done everything in preparation up to this point to put me in a position to where I can play at a high level and be really good. As long as I'm being attentive and being very intentional with my work, everything will fall in line and everybody else in that room will kind of carry the same thing too. Pressure is whatever you make it, you know what I'm saying? You have to look at the challenge and take it head on."
Q: On if there are challenges to being on a new team
Montgomery: "The first time it was, this time, not really much. It's not something I want to get used to at all, but it comes with the things that are different, having to move, put my son in a different school, but you [have] to be adaptive and just be ready for whatever comes when it does come. I'm happy to be here and I don't really want to go nowhere else, so I'm good here."
Q: On WR Jayden Higgins taking a step going into year two
Montgomery: "So, he went to Iowa State. I didn't play with him, but I've seen him play, so I'm not surprised at all. I carry a little bit of extra oomph when it comes to the [Iowa] State guys, because to that team out East, the black and gold or black and yellow, whatever you want to call it, they already look at us like the little brothers anyway, so they already know what expectation we bring. We come from a lineage of [Former Iowa State and current Penn State Head Coach] Matt Campbell and there's no surprise in him carry himself the way he does and being a professional and him taking a leap and a step. So yeah, I'm not surprised at all."
Q: On Head Coach DeMeco Ryans
Montgomery: "He's the real deal, he's for real and if you don't bring it, he’s going to let you know. We don't even have the pads on yet. Just being able to be behind a guy who believes in his players. He was a player – an elite player. He carries himself. He's a God-fearing man. That's who you want to lead the charge and you get a group of guys who buy in the defense. We have the best defense in the league, you know what I'm saying? We're trying to form our offense to where we can be the, one of the best, if not the best in the league also. With him having the expectations and him carrying himself the way he does and him not missing a beat, it forces you to be better, so you want that in a leader and I wouldn't ask anybody else."
Q: On RB Jawhar Jordan
Montgomery: "Yeah, he's a dog. To see 'DB' [Danny Barrett] have expectations for it not to be a fall-off at all going from player-to-player, no matter who is starting, who is not and it kind of see it to fruition in it. It's good for 'Jaws', because he needs that and he needed that. You could see his confidence here on the field. He's a smooth runner, he's confident and he has a smile that will light up the room. When you see a guy like that putting in the work, being committed, again being selfless enough to be here and take coaching from everybody, it makes sense and you understand why he has the success that he has. Whenever he gets this opportunity to just never be a beat of an eye of thinking that he can't handle it, because he's done it before and he'll continue to do it and he'll hold us up to the expectation that we all have to follow as well."
Q: On QB C.J. Stroud and his leadership
Montgomery: "Yeah, C.J. is poised. I don't see him really trip out too much over plays. He'll correct it, we'll talk about it and then we'll move on. That's what you like to see in a quarterback: somebody who's leading the offense and the one who's the general on that side of the ball. In any situation, he has to be the calmest and he has to be the one to rally the guys and we can have a conversation. He has to know what kind of energy he needs to bring depending on what situation it is. C.J. has done just that and you can tell he's getting more comfortable. He's starting to trust the guys. It's early on in camp, but I went to go throw with him this offseason in LA [Los Angeles] and to kind of see how he was and how calm he was, how poised he was like, that's what you want, that's what you need. I've been around some great quarterbacks. I was around 'JG' [Jared Goff], Andy Dalton, all of these guys that can sling it and had experience; I'm seeing like some of the same characteristics in C.J."
