Essex Post 91 is one win away from reaching the American Legion World Series.
Essex won its third game in as many days, holding off Bedford, New Hampshire, for a 7-6 victory at Fitton Field at Northeast Regionals in Worcester, Massachusetts on Saturday, Aug. 8.
Essex will next play at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 9. Essex's opponent, which will be determined following Saturday's elimination games, must beat the Vermont state champions twice. An Essex win clinches the regional crown and berth to the Legion World Series.
That feat — making the Legion World Series — would be a first for a Vermont program. It's also believed to be the first time a Vermont team has reached the championship round at Northeast regionals.
In the Aug. 8 victory, Jake Philbrick scored on a wild pitch with two outs in the top of the sixth inning to break a 6-all tie against Bedford. Alec Davis, the winning pitcher in relief, threw a scoreless bottom of the sixth and Jack Lorenzini picked up the save with a clean seventh inning for Essex (25-7), which has won six straight games dating back to the Vermont state tournament.
Lorenzini went 2-for-4 in the win. Garret Carter (1-for-3, 2B, RBI), Nico Caiano (1-for-4, 2B, RBI) and Owen Labor (1-for-3, 2 RBIs) also contributed in Essex's eight-hit attack.
In the tournament opener on Aug. 6, Essex bested Cumberland (Rhode Island) 4-1 behind Philbrick's complete-game performance (7H, 1R, 1ER, 5K, 5BB) and three-hit game at the plate to go along with multi-hit efforts from Chris Morgan (2-for-3), Caiano (2-for-4, 2B, RBI), Aatreyu Welkar (2-for-3) and Labor (3-for-4).
In a 10-1 rout of Sanford (Maine) on Aug. 7, Caiano went the distance (3H, 1R, 0ER, 4K, 2BB) while Morgan (3-for-5, 2B, 3 RBIs) and Davis (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) powered an 11-hit attack. Essex put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning bolstered by Davis's bases-clearing double.
The Northeast Regional tournament, including the championship round on Aug. 9, is being streamed by The Futures League Network.
