Something that is well deserved by Shane and it is IMO the best choice....

DOAN NAMED CAPTAIN

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Wednesday, September 10, 2003

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA --- Phoenix Coyotes General Manager Michael Barnett announced today that the Coyotes have named right wing Shane Doan as the team’s captain for the 2003-04 season. Doan becomes the Coyotes 15th captain since the team joined the NHL in 1979 and the third team captain since the franchise moved to Phoenix in 1996.

“Shane is very deserving to be our new captain,” said Barnett. “He was drafted by this organization and has become a complete player. This announcement evidences how important he is to our hockey club today and, at the same time, how valuable we see his contribution being both on and off the ice in the future.”

In eight NHL seasons (all with the Phoenix Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets), Doan has played in 569 games for the franchise, collecting 115-168-283 and 541 penalty minutes (PIM). He was drafted by the Jets (1st round, 7th overall) in the 1995 Entry Draft.

“It’s a great honor to be chosen as team captain,” said Doan. “It’s a tremendous responsibility and a great challenge that I am looking forward to. I’ve been very fortunate to be teammates with two great captains in Teppo Numminen and Keith Tkachuk and I’ve learned a lot from them. We have a great group of young players here now and the future looks bright for our organization.”

Last season, Doan ranked second on the Coyotes in assists (37) and points (58), and finished third in goals (21). He reached the 20-goal plateau for the fourth straight year and set single season career highs in power play goals (7) and games played (82). He led the team in shots and ranked first on the Coyotes in power play points (7-13-20), second in power play assists and fourth in power play goals. In his last 21 games, he recorded 5-15-20 and was a plus-5. Doan finished the season as one of only three Coyotes players (Johnson, Langkow) to play in every game and won the Labor Ready Hardest Working Player Award as voted on by fans through PhoenixCoyotes.com.

“We are very proud to name someone with the character of Shane as our new captain,” said head coach Bobby Francis. “Shane is a rare and unique player in that he has a high level of skill along with the utmost respect from his peers both on and off the ice. He is the right person to lead us in a new and exciting era for our franchise.”

Shane was the obvious choice, good to see him get the "C", he most certainly deserves it. We need a top year from Doan, he has the tools to be a top power forward, he needs to put all the pieces together. Hopefully, he won't be switched to center as he was last season, and will be left at his natural wing position.

Can't wait for camp to open Friday.

Congrats to the pig farmer from Alberta!!!!!!
Shane has really done it all with the Coyotes and is a great choice . I think his natural position is RW and hope he gets some ice time at that slot.
