Do not be surprised if Robbie Ray is the next player traded.

Ray, however, figures to be the player whose name surfaces most often in trade rumors this week. He is relatively affordable (projected 2019 salary: $6.1 million), has the pure stuff of a frontline pitcher and still has two years to go before free agency. Though he is coming off a down season, he finished the year strong, and a source said the Diamondbacks are holding a “really high bar” in what they would need back in order to move him.

Although the Diamondbackstraded first baseman Paul Goldschmidt last week, his departure isn’t necessarily a sign that a full-scale teardown is coming, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic hears. While Piecoro doesn’t rule out other deals involving notable D-backs veterans (e.g., Zack Greinke and Robbie Ray), he writes that they “seem comfortable standing pat” and addressing holes on their roster. If Arizona does part with Ray, it would take a lot to acquire him, as a source tells Piecoro the team has set a “really high bar” on a return for the left-handed strikeout artist. Ray, 27, is controllable for the next two seasons, including for a projected $6.1MM in 2019.

Why the heck would they trade Ray? They still need starting pitching, and Ray is cheap and controllable for two seasons.

For guys like Ray and Peralta it depends on the return but I don’t have issue moving them.
Doesn't every team need some stars, even if they will not be in the playoff race?

Right now, Ray and Peralta fit that category. I would have an issue moving either of them.

Indeed, if one of both are moved, this team might have trouble winning 30 or 40 games next year, and attendance would dip below that of the Devil Rays. (As it is, 100 losses are all but certain, and attendance will be remarkably, if not historically, low.)

I don't see why they would deal him, he is exactly what this team needs....young, cheap & controllable SP. If they deal him they might as well blow it all up including tossing in $30M to generate more interest for Greinke.

Under normal circumstances...yes. He'd be a $6MM salary dump. And they're already blowing the thing up, so get some bona fide prospects, not a 3rd banana catcher from the Cardinals.

  • The Diamondbacks would only consider trading Robbie Ray for a very big return, with Passan noting that Arizona would want more for Ray than the Mariners received from the Yankees for James Paxton back in November. While both Ray and Paxton are front-of-the-rotation southpaws with two remaining years of team control, Ray is almost three full years younger than Paxton, which would explain Arizona’s higher asking price. That deal saw Seattle land an MLB-ready pitching prospect (Justus Sheffield), another young arm on the brink of the majors (Erik Swanson) and a promising lower-level position player (outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams). It’s a steep price tag, though at least two teams with a lot of minor league depth have been linked to Ray in trade rumors.

94 WIP Sports Radio: Robbie Ray a trade option for Philadelphia Phillies
Jack Fritz writes: "Greinke’s teammate, Robbie Ray, will also be highly sought after this trade deadline given his huge strikeout potential, his age and contract. The Diamondbacks are technically still in the race in the NL Wild Card, but given that they traded away Paul Goldschmidt and let A.J Pollock walk in free agency, the Diamondbacks will most likely sell at the deadline and replenish their farm system. Ray is interesting. He’s not a free agent until 2021, strikes out a ton of guys, which is something the Phillies desperately need, but he does have issues with command and will cost a ton prospect-wise. Still, given that he’ll be able to help this year and next year, the Phillies should be in on Ray at the deadline. His overall stat-line is good: 3.83 ERA/1.3 WHIP/11.6 K/9/117 ERA+ His walks are trending down, only allowing one in each of his last three starts, which is a good thing but still he’s pretty hit or miss. There’s potential for more with Ray but the price will be steep. I think it would cost them both Medina and Luis Garcia, and a couple lower level prospects, given Robbie Ray’s age (27) and contract status. I’m just not sure he’s worth the huge haul it’s likely going to take to get him."
