It was a mixed bag yesterday for our Diamond Ducks. Here’s how the action went down:
Softball Game 3 vs. Northwestern
Oregon softball had some tense late innings in yesterday’s game against the Northwestern Wildcats before coming away with the win and a series victory, 4-2.
Lyndsey Grein started in the circle, and started in all three games against the Wildcats. That does not bode well for the current state of Oregon pitching, as it surely must mean that Elise Sokolsky is injured and cannot pitch.
Grein was able to keep NW off the board in the first two innings, but gave up a solo home run in the third inning as the Wildcats struck first with a 1-0 lead.
The Ducks picked up their first run of the contest when the NW pitcher walked Emma Cox with the bases loaded and two outs. That’s all Oregon would get in the inning, but they tied the game at one-apiece.
The Ducks added three more in the top of the fifth inning. Kaylynn Jones hit a two-run homer to right field, followed by Elon Butlerbelting a double down the left field line (after she had hit two foul balls down the same location). Taryn Ho walked, and then a double steal scored Butler for a 4-1 lead.

Grein encountered control problems in the bottom of the fifth inning, but was able to get away with just an additional RBI single to make the score 4-2.
After a scoreless 6th inning, the Ducks put up three more runs to make it a 7-2 ball game. Grein had more problems in the bottom of the seventh inning, and Taylour Spencer was brought in for relief, but she had problems right away, giving up a run, and Grein came back in.

It was all for naught, however. The game was halted in the seventh inning when the contest hit a mutually agreed upon time limit so that Oregon could catch a plane back home. The score then reverted to the last fully completed inning, and the Ducks won 4-2.
Baseball Game 2 vs. Santa Barbara
The UCSB Gauchos evened their series against the Ducks, when they took advantage of Oregon’s spotty pitching and inability to produce runs, winning the second game, 8-2.
Collin Clarke had a rough start, and was not helped by defensive miscues, especially in the second inning when UCSB took a 2-0 lead.
Clark settled down, but the Oregon bats were not able to get any traction against UCSB’s starter, Nathan Aceves, until the fifth inning. Four successive singles scored two runs and tied the match, 2-2. That was it for Aceves’ outing.
That was also it for Oregon’s batting. The Gauchos reliever, Cole Tryba, completely shut down Oregon’s offense from that point on. The Ducks picked up no hits in the final four innings, and Tryby walked no one while fanning six batters.

UCSB, on the other hand, found great success against Oregon’s relievers, and scored an additional four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put this game away and out of reach for Oregon.
The Ducks and the Gauchos play Game 3 tomorrow for the series win. First pitch is at 12:05 pm PT and can be seen on ESPN+.
