Oregon softball and baseball decided that matching victories was the way to go yesterday, and picked up identical 4-0 wins against Northwestern and the University of California Santa Barbara.
Softball Game 2 vs. Northwestern
After a disastrous pitching performance against the Northwestern Wildcats in Game 1 on Thursday, Oregon softball looked for a solid rebound to even this series. They got it yesterday in Illinois, as Lyndsey Grein and Taylour Spencer combined to pitch a one-hit shutout of the Wildcats, 4-0.
Grein pitched the first two innings, putting NW down in order and showed none of the pitching issues of the previous game.

Oregon got on the board first in the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead. The Ducks took advantage of successive NW mistakes that put Taryn Ho on second base and allowed Emma Coxto send her home.

The Ducks scored two more in the third inning off a triple and a sacrifice fly to pull ahead 3-0. Meanwhile, Spencer came to the circle in the bottom of the inning and pitched through the bottom of the sixth, allowing just one hit while walking one and fanning six.
SPICY!

Cox hit another sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth inning to extend Oregon’s lead to four. After Spencer struck out the Wildcats’ first batter of the sixth inning, Grein came back in to finish the game. I liked Oregon’s pitching strategy in this game – relieve pitchers when they’re pitching well, and give Grein a breather without the stress of being yanked because of control problems.
Lyndsey Grein finished the game by knocking down every batter she faced. Grein came away with four Ks along with no walks and no hits in 3.2 innings. Spencer Taylor got the win in 3.1 innings, with a final line of 6 Ks, one BB, and one hit.
Having evened the series, Oregon softball plays the rubber match this morning at 10:00 am PT.
Baseball Game 1 vs. Santa Barbara
The UCSB Gauchos are always a very good baseball team, and the Ducks almost always have entertaining games when they play Santa Barbara. The teams did not square off last season, but 2024 was memorable, with the Gauchos prevailing in an early-season series win but falling to Oregon in their own NCAA tournament regional.
Yesterday’s game was no different. If you look at the box score and see goose eggs through the first seven innings in a 1-0 Oregon win, the first thought would be that we saw a classic pitching battle.
It was a pitching battle, but not necessarily of the kind that comes to mind. The pitching on both sides was not particularly sharp, but the pitchers continually were able to get out of jams unscathed – in the scoreless first six innings, Oregon left 10 on base, and Santa Barbara left 11 on base.
UCSB’s Jackson Flora started for the Gauchos. He’s an excellent pitcher, but had some issues with control in this game. No matter; Oregon only picked up two hits in the five innings he pitched.

Will Sanford was our usual opening starter. The Gauchos hit twice on him and Sanford did his job in giving Oregon a full five innings of starting pitching. Sanford was relieved by Luke Morgan, who pitched in the sixth and seventh inning and also only gave up two hits. Tanner Bradley pitched the eighth inning and Devin Bell closed the game in the ninth, and UCSB got exactly nothing off them.
The Gauchos relievers were not as productive. Once Flora was off the hill, Oregon’s bats took advantage and began scoring runs.
Jack Brooksstruck first with a solo home run in the seventh inning. The Ducks wrapped the game up in a three-hit, three-run ninth inning to win Game 1. The ninth included a rare run scored off a Gauchos balk on the mound.
UCSB walked Drew Smith on purpose. With Jax Gimenezon third base, Oregon cleverly had Smith steal second base, but intentionally get caught in a rundown long enough for Gimenez to score.
