July 1 is typically the NHL's big free agent day as the window to sign UFAs opens to the league, but we still see a handful of impactful trades made as clubs shuffle their rosters for the upcoming season.
On Wednesday, the San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Darnell Nurse from the Edmonton Oilers after a lengthy period of trade rumors surrounding the blue liner. Nurse is in the midst of an eight-year, $74 million contract and has been a cornerstone piece of the Oilers for some time, but the marriage between the two had run its course after this past season.
Nurse now moves to San Jose for a new start and to help a burgeoning Sharks team take the next level to postseason contention, while the Oilers get much-needed cap relief. As the dust now settles on this deal, let's hand out grades to both the Sharks and the Oilers while getting into the details of the trade itself.
San Jose Sharks get: D Darnell Nurse
Edmonton Oilers get: D Shakir Mukhamadullin, D Zack Sharp
It's hard not to see this trade as a miss for the Sharks coming off of signing Jacob Trouba to a massive deal just hours earlier. The Sharks will now have $17.5 million wrapped up in the two defensemen for the next four years, which even with the salary cap increase is rough. If San Jose just added Nurse or even gotten Edmonton to retain here, this wouldn't feel as bad since the former Oiler is a talented defenseman and should bolster the Sharks' blue line.
It's a shame to see all the goodwill the Sharks acquired after a great draft go down the drain like this after this trade.

On the flip side, the Oilers come out of this trade quite nicely. No retention on Nurse's $9.25 million contract is tidy work by Edmonton as they free up a lot of cap space with this move. The Oilers get worse in the short-term, but Nurse's time with the team ran its course as Edmonton looks for a new direction on defense. Not much to complain about here, honestly!
