The Boston Bruins filled out their vacant assistant coaching spot yesterday, and a former Providence Bruins goalie picked up his second straight win in the Stanley Cup Final.

The Carolina Hurricanes are up 3-2; they are one win away from their first Cup in 20 years. Their 37-year-old captain continued to leave his mark on the series, and the Golden Knights’ goalie made history. John Tortorella was a classic John Tortorella after the game.

Elsewhere around the league, trade talk is everywhere. An 11-year Oiler requested a trade out of Edmonton, handed them a list of teams, and both sides agree that it’s time to move on. A 13-year Maple Leaf is also on the market, but the Leafs are reportedly not going to ask him for his preferred teams.

The Devils are looking for a top-six forward, and there is a forward in St. Louis that fits what they are looking for.

Nikita Kucherov won the Hart Trophy, two Bruins earned votes, but none cracked the top five.

In the coaching carousel, less on Mike Babcock, and more on other moves. No changes are coming to Colorado, the Canadiens lost their AHL coach, and Joe Pavelski confirmed he interviewed for the Maple Leafs’ vacancy.

Happy Friday, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:

Boston Bruins

MCILVANE: The Bruins announced the hire of San Diego Gulls (ANA-AHL) head coach Matt McIlvane yesterday. They did not announce his specific role, but the outgoing Jay Leach ran the defense for the last two seasons. He joins assistant coaches Steve Spott and Chris Kelly on Marco Sturm’s bench.

NHL News (via ): Here is the final voting tally for the Hart Trophy, awarded to Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov for the second time in his career. He finished the season with 130 points (44-86–130) in 76 games.

David Pastrnak finished in sixth with a third-place vote, 11 fourth-place votes, and 44 fifth-place votes. Jeremy Swayman picked up two fifth-place votes.

NHL News & National Hockey Now

Carolina Hockey Now: The Hurricanes are one win away from the Stanley Cup. Brandon Bussi started again, and he made 23 saves in his second straight win. Pavel Dorofeyev scored for the first time since Game 1 of the third round, but the Golden Knights only held the lead for 4:54. The top line finally delivered for the Hurricanes; Rachel Barkley has more on Game 5.

Jordan Staal became the first player since 1956 to score a goal in each of the first five Cup Final games. On the other end, Carter Hart made history as the first goaltender to allow 4+ goals in each of the first five Cup Final games.

Jonny Lazarus (video via ): John Tortorella was asked if he considered going to Adin Hill in the third period, and it did not sound like he thought about it at all.

Sportsnet: The Oilers are going through the Mike Babcock investigation, but they continue to dominate headlines as Darnell Nurse has requested a trade. Elliotte Friedman and Mark Spector report that he gave the Oilers a list of 3-5 teams he would consider.

The Fourth Period: Two of the teams? The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Los Angeles Kings, according to David Pagnotta. The Oilers also tried trading him to the Maple Leafs during the season. Twice.

Toronto Hockey Now: Morgan Rielly is also on the market this summer, but the Maple Leafs are not going to ask him for a list of teams. That may change, but the current belief is that Toronto will evaluate a Rielly move on a case-by-case basis.

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils are in need of a top-six forward this summer, so why not target Jordan Kyrou? The 27-year-old has been listed on trade boards, and he is a fit alongside an offense with Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, and Nico Hischier. James Nichols explains why Kyrou is a reasonable trade target in Newark.

Florida Hockey Now: The Panthers have a lot of decisions to make, especially on goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. They usually do bring in a defenseman, though, even if they are pretty well set. George Richards looks at some of the UFA defensemen, including Andrew Peeke.

Peeke is a native of Parkland, FL, only 10 miles north of Sunrise.

Montreal Hockey Now: Another AHL head coach moved into an NHL assistant role yesterday. The Seattle Kraken hired Pascal Vincent, who spent the last two seasons coaching the Laval Rocket (MTL-AHL). Vincent coached the Blue Jackets for one season after Mike Babcock resigned in 2023.

The Kraken also hired Patrik Allvin as vice president and assistant general manager.

Colorado Hockey Now: The Avalanche held their end-of-season press conference yesterday, and Joe Sakic announced they will not be making any coaching changes this summer. The decision to keep Jared Bednar did not seem difficult for the front office, but he is going into the last year of his contract extension. Aarif Deen has more from the Avalanche press conference.

San Jose Hockey Now: Joe Pavelski is in the running for the Toronto Maple Leafs’ head coaching job. He confirmed those reports at a media availability at an American Century Championship (celebrity golf tournament at Lake Tahoe) yesterday.
