There’s a new No. 1 center on the market.
The Red Wings captain stole headlines yesterday after Elliotte Friedman reported his trade request. The Bruins are absolutely one team that should line up, but they will have a lot of competition. Ultimately, the trade is up to Larkin, but Steve Yzerman will not go down with no return.
To no surprise, teams around the NHL are going to want Larkin.
In other Bruins-related news, a Providence forward was extended, and Claude Julien was hired in Switzerland.
Elsewhere in the league, Game 2 of the Cup Final went to overtime, a Russian winger wants an extension in New Jersey, and more trade talk surrounding top-10 draft picks.
Happy Friday, catch up on Bruins and league news in today’s Daily Bean:
Boston Bruins
LARKIN: At the end-of-season press conference, Cam Neely said the Bruins lack a true No. 1 center. Sure, they have two in the pool, but how often do 1Cs hit the market? Dylan Larkin‘s trade request should have the Bruins interested.
Any move for Larkin would force management to look at the futures of the team, including James Hagens and Fraser Minten.
LEACH: According to David Pagnotta, Jay Leach is the frontrunner for the Hartford Wolf Pack head coaching job.
An announcement is not expected until July.
MUTTER: The Bruins announced the signing of Providence forward Navrin Mutter yesterday. He is signed through the 2026-27 season on a two-way deal worth $850,000.
Mutter, acquired in March, played 12 regular-season games and four playoff games with Providence.

JULIEN: The man who coached the Bruins to a Stanley Cup in 2011 will coach the next two seasons in Switzerland. Claude Julien signed a two-year deal to become the next head coach of the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League.

NHL News & National Hockey Now
Carolina Hockey Now: What a game. The Golden Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead, the Hurricanes went up 3-2, and Vegas forced overtime. Seth Jarvis won the game at the 3:56 mark of the extra period. Rachel Barkley has the takeaways from the winning side.
NHL (video via YouTube): Here is Jarvis’ overtime winner.
Gino Hard (video via ): After the game, John Tortorella said he would challenge this play “10 out of 10 times.”
Another look at the no-goal call and failed coach's challenge for Vegas that led to Carolina's 3rd goal of the game…
The NHL's reasoning for the call was that Barbashev shoved Andersen's glove, causing the puck to go in, per @FriedgeHNIC pic.twitter.com/dY77bO7oiS

Carolina took a 3-2 lead on the following power play.
Detroit Hockey Now: The big news yesterday comes from Detroit. Dylan Larkin requested a trade, per Elliotte Friedman. None of the involved parties spoke on the subject, but there have been multiple reports about Larkin’s desire to leave.
Detroit Hockey Now: And the reaction from Detroit? Bob Duff writes that Larkin is soft. The lifelong Red Wings fan turned captain has some responsibility for how the season went, and Steve Yzerman expected more out of him.
Philly Hockey Now: Boston will not be alone if they pursue Larkin. The Philadelphia Flyers are also a team that needs a No. 1 center. Now that one is on the market, Will James writes that the Flyers should go for it.
Colorado Hockey Now: It’s a long shot, but the Avalanche should take a swing at Larkin. If he wants to play for a serious contender, then Aarif Deen says anything and everything should be on the table for Joe Sakic.
New Jersey Hockey Now: Arseny Gritsyuk wants a multi-year extension in New Jersey, James Nichols reports. The 25-year-old had 31 points (13-18–31) in 66 games with the Devils this season, his first pro season in North America, and he’s looking to stick around.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: No top-10 draft picks have been traded since 2022, and only four have moved in the last 10 years. With a handful of top-10 picks available this year, Dan Kingerski examines the potential of the Penguins moving up.
