Daily Bean: P-Bruins Win, Canadiens Advance, Maple Leafs Hire New GM

BOSTON – The Boston Bruins’ breakup day/locker room cleanout/exit interview day was yesterday; the players are done.

We heard a lot. Every player had something to say, Marco Sturm had a lot to say, and the front office will talk on Wednesday afternoon – after the Bruins find out their fate in the draft lottery.

Elsewhere around the league, the first round came to a close with an Atlantic Division Game 7, and the Avalanche and Wild scored more goals than the Bruins did in the entire first round. The second round matchups have also been finalized, and the action continues tonight with two games.

The Maple Leafs started to fill their front office, and more are reportedly coming. The Rangers made some personnel changes in the player development department.

Boston Bruins​

INJURIES: Breakup day. With the Bruins making the playoffs, some players played through injuries – why would anyone stop? They will use the summer to heal. Seven players revealed something they nursed throughout the season.

We knew about Nikita Zadorov‘s MCL, but David Pastrnak told reporters about an injury that he battled starting in November.

ARVIDSSON: The Bruins traded a fifth-round pick for Viktor Arvidsson last summer, and it was well worth it. He made up the second line, one of the best lines in the entire NHL, but now he is due for a contract. He said he was open to returning to Boston, but both he and head coach Marco Sturm said there is more to consider.

Prospects Update​

PROVIDENCE: The P-Bruins evened the series with a win over the Springfield Thunderbirds (STL) last night. Matej Blümel opened the scoring, and Georgii Merkulov regained the lead; both goals came in the first period. Michael DiPietro made 27 saves in the win, 14 coming in the third period.

Lukas Reichel cleared waivers and played on the second line with Merkulov and Matt Poitras.

NHL News & National Hockey Now​

Montreal Hockey Now: Game 7: the two best words in sports. The Canadiens and Lightning met for the only Game 7 of Round 1, and it was a good one. Alex Newhook scored the game-winning goal with 8:53 to play in the third period, and on the Canadiens’ seventh shot of the night.

The Canadiens only had nine shots, a Stanley Cup playoffs record for the fewest shots on goal in a win.

Also, for the first time since the Bruins in 2019, the Eastern Conference Champion will not be a Florida team.

Colorado Hockey Now: This game was insane. There were 15 goals, evenly divided with five coming in each period. The Avalanche jumped to a 3-0 lead, then the Wild climbed back and took a 5-4 lead. Aarif Deen has more takeaways from a crazy Game 1.

Sportsnet: The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired John Chayka as their GM and Mats Sundin as a senior executive advisor. Chayka was the GM and president of hockey operations for the Arizona Coyotes from 2016 until he quit in 2020. While in charge, he sought job opportunities from other teams, and the Coyotes lost a first- and a second-round pick after hosting a private scouting combine.

After he quit, he was suspended by the league for “conduct detrimental to the league and game.”

David Pagnotta (via ): In the early morning, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reported that more changes are coming to the Maple Leafs’ front office. Notably, Shane Doan’s time is coming to an end after three seasons as the Special Assistant to the GM.

With Chayka & Sundin now at the top of the Hockey Ops totem pole in Toronto, expect a few more front office changes to eventually occur. Among them, I’m told Shane Doan’s tenure with the Maple Leafs is coming to an end.

Forever Blueshirts: The New York Rangers lost Jed Ortmeyer after nine seasons as their director of player development. They promoted Tanner Glass to the role yesterday. Glass played 11 seasons in the NHL, and played for the Rangers from 2014-17; he was a bottom-six forward. John Kreiser has more on the hire.

Sabres.com: The Buffalo Sabres will not have either Noah Ostlund or Sam Carrick for their second-round matchup against the Canadiens. Carrick did not play in the first round; the Sabres traded for him at the trade deadline.
