Just as the Boston Bruins entered the offseason, they lost out on one more thing.

The Toronto Maple Leafs won the draft lottery, because of course they did, and will select with the first-overall pick in late June. The Bruins traded for this pick, but will now have to wait to select with it.

Don Sweeney, Cam Neely, and Charlie Jacobs will meet with the media today for the end-of-season press conference at 2:00 PM. (NESN livestream link.)

Elsewhere around the league, the Sharks scooped up the second overall pick and will add another key piece to their already successful youth movement. The Avalanche jumped out to a 2-0 series lead over the Minnesota Wild, and there will be another front office change in Vancouver.

The NHL also announced the three finalists for the Calder Trophy.

Happy Wednesday, catch up on Bruins and league news in a loaded Daily Bean:

Boston Bruins

FIRST ROUND PICK: The Bruins lost their 2026 first-round pick last night. The Maple Leafs protected it (top five) in the Brandon Carlo trade, and their new management inherited the first-overall pick.

The Bruins will either wait until 2027 or 2028 for the pick, according to PuckPedia. However, the Flyers and Leafs did complete the Scott Laughton trade before the Carlo trade, so Philadelphia initially owned the rights to the 2027 first-round pick.

But the Maple Leafs also protected that pick, and that protection is top 10. If the Maple Leafs have a top 10 pick next season, they would choose between Boston and Philadelphia, and whoever does not get the pick will slide to 2028.

Chris Johnston (via ): That brings us here. The Flyers believe that they still get the 2027 first-rounder, and now that the Bruins are involved, their belief is that the pick becomes unprotected (as it cannot slide to 2028 if the Bruins are there). There is a “good chance” the Bruins get the 2028 first-rounder, according to Chris Johnston.

Further to this: It sounds like there's a good chance the NHL would rule in Philadelphia's favor if this scenario plays out.

Meaning, if Toronto retains its 2026 1st after tonight's lottery, expect 2027 1st to go to Flyers and 2028 1st to Bruins … both unprotected. https://t.co/Iyq5Fq0CM5

This will unfold in the next few days.

If it is 2028, the Bruins will have three first-rounders that year: their own, and two unprotected (Florida, Toronto).

NHL News & National Hockey Now

Colorado Hockey Now: The Colorado Avalanche are up 2-0 on the Minnesota Wild. At first, the game looked like it was going to be another Game 1, with Martin Necas scoring 2:51 into the game, Kirill Kaprizov scoring six seconds later, and then Gabe Landeskog scoring on Colorado’s second shot of the night, but the scoring calmed down after that as we went from a 15-goal game to a seven-goal game.

Aarif Deen has more on the 5-2 win.

PLAYOFFS:

  • A1 – Sabres (0) vs. A3 – Canadiens (0)
  • M1 – Hurricanes (2) vs. M3 – Flyers (0)
  • C1 – Avalanche (2) vs. C3 – Wild (0)
  • P1 – Golden Knights (1) vs. P3 – Ducks (0)

Sportsnet: The Toronto Maple Leafs won the Gavin McKenna sweepstakes yesterday, securing the No. 1 pick at the draft this June. The Maple Leafs have missed the playoffs twice in the last 11 seasons, and both times they have won the draft lottery.

NHL (video via YouTube): ICYMI… here was the moment the Leafs won the lottery (and the Bruins lost out on the first-round pick).

San Jose Hockey Now: Right behind them is the San Jose Sharks at No. 2. The Sharks have won a draft lottery in each of the last three seasons, selecting Macklin Celebrini in 2024 and Michael Misa in 2025.

#TheFutureIsTeal… and scary.

NHL (video via YouTube): Here is the drawing of the second draft lottery.

Sportsnet: After the draft, Jim Rutherford will step down from his role as the Canucks’ president of hockey operations; he is moving to an adviser role. The Canucks fired GM Patrik Allvin after finishing 25-49-8 last season, and Rutherford said their GM search has come down to five candidates.

The Canucks will select third at this year’s draft after finishing with the league’s worst record.

NHL.com: Ivan Demidov (MTL), Matthew Schaefer (NYI), and Beckett Sennecke (ANA) are the three finalists for the Calder Trophy, given to the league’s best rookie. Demidov had 62 points in a full 82-game season, Schaefer tied the record for the most goals from a rookie defenseman, and Sennecke was tied for the lead in rookie goal scoring with 23.

Today’s NHL Schedule

Canadiens at Sabres, Game 1 – 7:00 PM (US: TNT, HBO; CA: CBC, SN, TVA)

Ducks at Golden Knights, Game 2 – 9:30 PM (US: TNT, HBO; CA: SN, SN360, TVA)
