You never know when you’re watching history in the making.

The Philadelphia Phillies certainly didn’t know that when Cristopher Sanchez took the mound on the final day of April 30, but as the last few weeks have transpired, everyone has been well aware of what the pitcher has the chance to accomplish.

Sanchez has been one of MLB’s best pitchers all season long, and he put together another marvelous outing on Wednesday afternoon against the San Diego Padres. He tossed 7.0 innings, struck out nine batters, gave up just six hits, and didn’t issue a single walk.

The most historic piece this outing, though, was that, once again, the Phillies starting pitcher didn’t allow a single run. Sanchez’s scoreless innings streak is now up to 41.2 innings, which sets a new Philadelphia franchise record, previously held by Grover Cleveland back during the 1911 season.

After this outing, he also moved into the top-10 of the longest single-season scoreless innings pitched streak during the live-ball era, which started in 1920.

Sanchez still has a ways to go to crack the top of this list, though. The least is Orel Hershiser, who threw 59 scoreless innings during the 1988 season.

It’s not even just that Sanchez has not been allowing runs during this historic stretch; he’s also getting deep into games, too, routinely seeing a lineup the third time through.

Sanchez’s five consecutive scoreless outings of seven or more innings is tied for second-most since 1900.

Simply put, Sanchez is on a historic run and is showing no signs of slowing down.

After the game and all the history had been made, Sanchez described this moment (through his interpreter) as "Something special, something really important. I never imagined something like this, so I'm just, really happy and proud of myself."

With the scoreless streak and Sanchez’s 1.47 ERA and 1.16 WHIP on the season so far, he’s certainly putting himself in a solid position to be a National League Cy Young finalist once again and is building a strong resume to win the prestigious award.
